T ARGET HEART RA TE Program
The T arget Hear t Rate Pr ogram oers users the ability to tar get a specic heart rate / Bpm (Beats-per-minute range)
or heart rate zone for maximum car diovascular training . W ith one piece of information (user age), the console will
automatically calculate the Estima ted C alculated Maximum Heart Rate as well as some common heart rate tr aining
zones (65%, 75% and 85% of Max Bpm). Additionally , a specic Bpm of the user’ s choice can be enter ed.

HEART RA TE TRAINING
Heart R ate is an Important Key to Y our Exercise . The Surgeon General released a r eport on physical ac tivity and
health stating ex ercise and tness ar e benecial for a person ’ s health and emphasiz ed the need for exer cise as a key
component for disease pr evention and healthier living . T he best way t o determine ex ercise in tensity is to monitor
your pulse ra te. Heart rate can easily be monit ored by c ounting the number of heart beats per minute at the chest,
wrist or the carotid arter y on your neck, how ever it is dicult to so while ex ercising. T o aid in hear t rate training , the
AirRunner console is equipped with a wireless heart rate r eceiver which can detect a HR signal being transmitted by a
wireless chest strap ( option).
Calculated Maximum Heart Rate
Y our target heart rate depends primarily upon your age . It is key t o work within a safe and pr oductive zone . If the
exer cise intensity is too lo w or too high, only modest gains will be made in strength and car diov ascular tness. A
work out at a very low intensity will not oer maximum benets .
It is general perc eived that it is most e ective to train at a heart rate between 65% and 85% of y our maximum heart
rate . Calculat ed Maximum Heart Rate is calculated as a percen tage of your Maximum Heart Rate (estima ted as 220
Bpm minus your age).
T o calculate your C alculated Maximum Heart Rate and nd the appropria te tar get training zone , use the following
formulas. The following estimations ar e relev ant for a 35-y ear-old user:
220 – 35 = 185 BPM (220 – Age = Calculat ed Maximum Heart Rate in Bpm)
0.65 x 185 = 120 BPM (65% of 185 BPM [Calcula ted Maximum Heart Rate] = 120 Bpm)
0.85 x 185 = 157 BPM (85% of 185 BPM [Calcula ted Maximum Heart Rate] = 185 Bpm)
The r ecommended heart rate training zone f or this user would be between 120 Bpm and 157 Bpm.
Using the W ireless Heart Rate Receiv er
In general, a wir eless heart rate chest strap is the most accura te and con venient method of det ecting and monitoring
a heart rate signal. Occasionally , cer tain factors can negatively aect the accurat e transmission of the heart rate
signal. Wi-Fi netw orks, cor dless telephones and lar ge electrical appliances may degrade or corrupt the signal
creating an err atic or impossibly high Bpm. The only remedy for such a symptom is t o isolate the unit fr om potential
disturbances. A dditionally , a person’ s body chemistr y or lack of perspiration can preven t the chest strap from
providing a str ong or accura te heart rate signal. A wir eless heart rate rec eiving system is one featur e found on this
unit. In or der for the console to det ect and display your heart rate wirelessly , four(4) conditions must be pr esent:
• A compatible heart rate chest strap tr ansmitter must be functioning and worn. The console requir es a dual-band
ANT+/Bluetooth Lo w Energy heart rate chest str ap . Several manufacturers oer dual band models . A short list of
compatible models can be found in the appendix at the end of this manual . For proper function of the chest strap ,
please refer t o the manufacturer’ s instructions.
• Both the console and hear t rat e chest strap must be pow ered on/activat ed.
• A work out program must be r unning.
• The ANT+/Bluetooth LE heart rate chest strap is pair ed to the console.
Pairing the Wireless ANT+/Bluetooth LE Heart Rate T ransmitter to the AirRunner C onsole.
Ther e are two w ays to connect the ANT+/BTLE heart rate chest strap t o the AirRunner console.
• Bluetooth: If monitoring the w orkout thr ough a compatible mobile device and applica tion, pairing of heart rate
strap will occur via the Bluetooth radio fr om within the application. F ollow the application instructions which
will include turning the Bluetooth radio on in the mobile device , pressing the C ONNECT key on the console and
selecting the AirRunner treadmill.
• ANT+: If a mobile device is not used, pairing will oc cur via the ANT+ radio . Ensur e the chest strap is on and
worn corr ectly . Pr ess and hold the CONNECT k ey for 5 seconds. “ ANT+HR” will begin to ash in the alpha-numeric
display until the heart rate strap pairs t o the console. When paired , the HEART RA TE banner will begin to ash and
the alpha-numeric display will ash “C onnec ted” follow ed by “ ANT+HR ” ash to c onrm connection.
