Most models are equipped with two disc brake systems (front brake lever is left, rear brake
lever right) or with two rim or V-brakes. As brakes are a key safety element, their functioning
should be checked before each ride by tightening both brake levers. When pushing or pressing
the bike at the handlebar, the wheels may not move and the brake levers should have a game
of less than 3 to 4 cm, to handle a stop.
During first runs, the disc brakes often have not the full effect. But after several tens of braking,
they are ‘slowed’ and efficient and the brake pressure is to be dosed well. Whenever possible,
brake with both levers and avoid any wheel blocking.
Note: A braking action on the front wheel usually has a slightly higher effect, than on the rear
wheel.
On longer trips with higher loads (e. g. hill climbing) the disc brakes can run hot. In this case do
not grasp the disc with bare hands. If necessary take a break, until the brake system has cooled
down.
In the case of irregularities or a decreasing brake force you should check the hydraulic system
(oil) of the brake. It must be properly filled and sealed, the ceramic brake pads and the brake
discs may not be ground down, the mechanics should be intact and free of grease. Greater dirt
is to be avoided or eliminated.
With a pulled brake, in any case no fluid must emerge at the pressure lines. The calip should be
fix and the front and rear brake discs must not wobble nor sand.
The measures how to adjust the brakes, fill it, bled or replaced it, are described in the attached
original manufacturer documents. Ask for advice of a bicycle expert, especially when it comes
to the replacement of brake discs, brake head or hydraulic system. Always remember, that your
live and physical integrity may depend on properly functioning brakes.
