(E N) Step 2: C ontrols
This chapter d escrib es the vari ous control el ements
of your mix ing console. All contro ls, switche s and
connec tor s will be discu ssed in det ail.
(1) MIC – Each m ono input channe l oers a
balanced mic rophone inp ut via the XLR
connec tor and also f eatures s witchable
+4 8/ + 1 5 V phantom power su pply for
condense r microphon es. TheXENY X preamps
provide u ndistor ted and nois e-fr ee gain
as is t ypically k nown only f rom costl y
outbo ardpreamps.
( 2 ) LINE IN – Each mon o input also feat ures
a balanced line in put on a ¼ " co nnec tor .
Unbalanceddev ices ( mono jac ks) can also be
connec ted to the se input s. Please rememb er
that you can o nly use eithe r the microph one
or the line inp ut of a channel at any one t ime.
Y o u can never use b oth simultane ously!
( 3 ) GAIN – Use the GAIN cont rol to adjus t the
input gain. Th is control shoul d always be
turned f ully counter clock wise whenever you
connec t or disco nnec t a signal source to one
of the inpu ts.
( 4 ) EQU ALIZER – All mono input c hannels
include a 3- band equalizer, except for the
Q502 USB, whichis equippe d with a 2-band
EQ. All bands provide b oost o r cut of up to
1 5dB. In the centra l position, thee qualizer
isinac tive.
( 5 ) LOW CUT – In addi tion, the mono chann els
(Q 1002U SBand Q1 202 USB ) are equi pped
with a s teep LOWCUT lter (slope at 1 8 dB/
oc t., - 3dB a t 7 5 Hz) designed to eliminate
unwanted low-f requenc y signalcompo nents.
( 6 ) FX (Q8 02USB/Q1 002USB /Q1 202USB onl y)–
FX se nds ( or AUX sends ) enable you to fe ed
signals via a var iable control f rom one or
more chann els and sum these si gnals to
a bus. Theb us appears at t he console’s FX
send ou tput and c an be fed f rom there to
an ex ternal e ec ts device. The re turn f rom
the e ect s unit is then b rought bac k into
the conso le on the aux re turn connec tor s
(Q802 USB) or normal chann el inputs . Each FX
send is mon o and feature s up to + 15 dB gain.
( 7 ) PAN – The P AN control d etermines t he
posit ion of the channel si gnal within
the ster eo image. Thiscontr ol feature s a
const ant-power charac teristi c, whichmeans
the signal is alw ays maintained at a
const ant level, irrespe ct ive of position i n the
stere opanorama.
( 8 ) LEVEL – T he LEVEL contro l determine s the
level of the cha nnel signal in the main mi x.
( 9 ) CLIP – The CLIP LED’s of the mono channels
illuminate when th e input signal is dri ven
too high, whic h could cause di stor tion. Ifthis
happens, us e the GAIN control to r educe
the preamp le vel until the LED doe s not
lightanymor e.
( 10 ) LINE IN – Eac h stereo c hannel has t wo
balanced line le vel inputs on ¼" jacks fo r lef t
and right c hannels. If only the j ack marked “L ”
(lef t) is used, the c hannel operate s in mono.
The ster eo channels are de signed to handle
t ypical line level si gnals. Bothinpu ts will also
accept unbalanced jack s.
( 11 ) FX – The F X sends of th e stereo cha nnels
func tion si milar to those of the m ono
channels. However, since the FX send b uses
are both mo no, amono sum is rs t taken from
the ster eo input be fore it is s ent to the FX bus .
The Q502 USB is not equipp ed with F Xsen ds.
( 12 ) BAL – The BAL(ANCE) control de termines th e
levels of lef t and r ight input signals re lative
to each other b efore b oth signals are then
routed to t he main stere o mix bus. If a channe l
is operate d in mono via the le f t line input,
this contr ol has the sam e func tion as the PAN
control u sed in the mo no channels.
( 13 ) + 4 / -10 – The ste reo input s of the
XENY X Q 1002 USB and Q 1 202US B have
an input s ensitivit y sw itch which se lec ts
bet ween +4dBu an d - 1 0 dBV . At - 10 dBV
(home -recordi ng level) , the input is m ore
sensiti ve ( r equires le ss level to drive it) than at
+4 dBu (stu diolevel) .
(14) S TEREO A UX RETURN – Q802U SB only:
theSTEREO AUX RETURN conn ec tors are us ed
to bring th e output of t he ex ternal ee ct s
device (whose inp ut is derived f rom the
aux send s ) b ack into the conso le. Y ou ca n
instead us e these conn ecto rs as addi tional
input s, but any ee ct s device will then have
to be broug ht back into the con sole via a
normal s tereo channe l. This does, however ,
give you the abili ty to us e the channel EQ on
the e ect s retu rn signal if you wish. I f only
the lef t conne ctor i s used, the AUX RETURN
automatic ally operates i n mono. Use the
AUXRETURN contro l to determine how muc h
of the e ec ts signal is se nt to the main mix.
(15) F X SEND – The FX SEND outpu t ( does not
apply fo r Q50 2US B) should be connec ted
to the input o f an ex ternal ee ct s unit.
The pos t-fader FX signal yo u created using
the inpu t channel FX con trols is sent to the
ee ct s unit via the F X SEND ouput. Usethe
FXSEND contr ol of the main se cti on to
adjust t he overall send level (Q 1002 USB and
Q1 202 USBonly) .
(16) PHO NES/CTRL RO OM – The ster eo
PHONES jac k ( at t he top of the conne ctor
panel) iswhe re you connec t headphon es.
Theunbalance d CTRLRO OM OUT jacks
car ry th e summed ee ct s and main mix
signals, aswell as so loed channel sig nals.
ThePHONES/C TRL ROOM contro l adjust s the
level of both h eadphones and ma in monitor
outpu ts. TheQ502US B is not equ ipped wit h
control r oomoutp uts.
( 17 ) MAIN MI X – The MAIN OUT conne ctor s are
unbalanced m ono jack s. The main mix signal
appear s here at a level of 0 dBu. Th eMAINMIX
fader a djust s the volume of thes e output s.
TheXENY X Q802U SB and Q502 USB mixing
console s feature a rot ary co ntrol for
thispur pose.
( 18 ) 2 - TR ACK INPUT – The 2- T RACK INPUT s
are use d to bring an ex ternal sig nal source
( e.g.CD player , taped eck, etc . ) i nto the
console. They c an also be use d as a standa rd
stere o line input, so t he output of a s econd
XENY X or BEHRINGER UL TR ALINK PRO MX882
can beco nnec ted.
( 19 ) 2- TR ACK OUTPUT – These connec tor s are
wired i n parallel wit h the MAIN OUT and car ry
the main mix sig nal ( un balanced). C onnec tthe
2- TR ACK OUTPUT to the input s of your
record ing device. Theout put level is adjus ted
via the high -prec ision MAIN MIX fader o r
rot ar y cont rol (Q802USB/Q502USB ).
( 20 ) U SB/2- TR t o MAIN – When pres sed,
thisbut ton send s the audio f rom the
USB and 2 - TR A CK input s to the main mix
(Q 502 USBonly) .
( 21 ) USB/2 - TR to PHONES – When pres sed,
thisbut ton send s the audio f rom the USB
and 2- TR ACK inputs to th e PHONES jack
(Q 502 USBonly) .
( 22 ) FX TO CTRL ROOM – If you wa nt to monitor
only the F X send signal in your h eadphones
or monito r speaker(s ), press the F X TO CTRL
swi tch. This mutes the mai n mix signal while
routi ng the FXSEND out put to the monito r(s ).
The XENY X Q802U SB and Q502 USB do not
featur e this switch.
( 23 ) +48 V – T he red +4 8 V LED lights up w hen
phantom power is on. T he PHANTOM switch
ac tivates the p hantom power supply on t he
XLR connec tor s of all mono channels .
( 24 ) POWER – The POWER LED indic ates that the
console is p owered on.
( 25 ) LEVEL INDICATOR – The high-pr ecision
4-s egment display accu rately displays the
relevant sig nal level.
( 26 ) COMP – This knob a djusts t he amount of
compres sion eec t on th e channel.
( 27 ) PHANTOM – Press this knob to s end +4 8 V
