GETTING ST ARTED
INTRODUCTION
With the PT-1090 you can crea te labels fo r
any appli cati on. Sele ct f rom th e ma ny
frame s, charac ter size s and s tyles to desig n
custom labels. In additio n, the va riety o f tape
cartridge s allows you to pri nt labels with
different widths and colo urs.
Read thi s guide carefull y before st arting and
keep th e guide in a handy place for future
reference .

WARNING
Follow these guideli nes t o avoid the r isk o f

• Always use the spe cified vol tage and the su ggeste d
AC adapt er (A D-24ES ) to p revent any damag e or
failure.
• Unplug the ada pter c ord imm ediately and sto p usi ng
the P-to uch lab eller du ring an elec tric s torm.

Do not use the P-touch labe ller/adapter in places of hi gh
humidity such as bathrooms. Do not get the P-t ouch
labeller/ adapter/power plug wet such as by handling
them with wet hands or spil ling beverages onto it .
• Do not overlo ad the adap ter cord. Do not for cibly ben d
or pull the ada pter cord. D o not damage or place hea vy
objects on the ada pter cord or plug.
• Hold the plug wh en disco nnecti ng the ad apter cord
from the power o utlet. D o not use an ou tlet tha t is loo se.
• Do not swallow the cutter stoppe r.
• Do not disassem ble or m odify th e P-touc h lab eller/
adapter/ bat teries. Do not us e meta llic obje cts such as
tweezers or a p en whe n chan ging th e batt eries. Do not
throw the batter ies into fir e or ex pose to he at.

using th e P-tou ch labell er im mediate ly if you n otice
abnorma l odour , heat, discol oration , defor mation or

• Do not touch the e dge o f the cu tter or an y metal part
near the print h ead.
• Remove the batte ries and di sconnect the adap ter if you
do not i ntend to use the P-touch labe ller for an
extended peri od of t ime.
• Do not use old and ne w batter ies toge ther or m ix
alkaline b atterie s with oth er type s.
• Do not d rop or hi t the P-to uch labe ller/ada pter. Do not
press har d on the L CD disp lay.
• Do not put your fi nger be tween t he cove rs when you
close the ca ssette co ver.
GENERAL PRECAUTIONS
• Depend ing on the loca tion, ma terial, a nd
environ mental con ditio ns, the label ma y unpee l or
become ir remova ble, the colour of the label may
change or be tr ansferred to oth er obje cts. Befor e
applying the lab el, check the en vironme ntal con ditio n
and the m ateria l.
• Do not us e the la belle r in an y way o r for an y pur pose
not described in th is guide. Doing so ma y result in
acciden ts or dama ge to t he mac hine.
• Only use a soft, dry cloth to clea n the la beller; n ever
use alcohol or oth er organic solve nts.
• Use a cott on swab to clean the print he ad; neve r touch
the p rint head.
• Do no t put any forei gn objects in to the tape exit sl ot or
adapter etc.
• Do not place t he l abeller/ batter ies/AC adapter in direct
sunlight or rain, ne ar heat ers or oth er hot ap pliances, in
any locati on expose d to ext remely high or low
temperat ures ( e.g. on the dashb oard o r in the back o f
your car), high humidi ty, or dusty loc ations .
• Do not app ly excessive pressu re to the cutter le ver.
• Do not try to print if the casse tte is empty; it will damage
the p rint head.
• Do not pull the tap e while printing o r feeding; it will
damage t he tap e and t he l abeller.
• Any data stored in memory will be lost due to failure or
repair of the l abeller , or if th e batte ry expir es and no
adapter is connected .
TROUBLESHOOTING

- Y ou tried to enter a third line by pr essing .
Note: Use ei ther 9 mm or 12 mm wide tap e when
printing two lines.

Note: Do not pus h the cutte r lever wh ile printing.
Full! The max imum number of charac ters (80 C haract ers for
regular text, or 50 c harac ters for DEC O MOD E) ha ve
already been ent ered.
T ext Limit!
- The text length exceeds the selected Label length.
- Th e text leng th e xceed s 200 mm wh en “La bel Length ”
is set t o [Auto] in DECO MODE.

If the m inimum l abel l ength 30mm is selec ted, some frame
types (Lea f or S tar) will n ot allow y ou to ente r additiona l text.
No Fram e OK? Fram es can no t be printe d on 3.5 mm tap e.
Selec t to print with no frame or to cancel.
OK t o F eed? T ape feeds af ter printi ng when [Chain Prt] is selected.

Cooling
If the pri nt head bec omes too hot, t he la beller s tops printing
and automa ticall y starts to cool down. The cool down time will
be disp layed. Once the p rint h ead is co ol, pr inting will c ontinue
automatic ally . Do not touch the labelle r whil e cooli ng.
Insert 12 mm!
Only 12 mm tape c assett e is suitable f or DECO MO DE.
No Cassette! Insert a cassette

Problem Possible sol ution
The di spla y stay s blan k af ter yo u have
turned on th e machine.
- Check t he batte ries are corre ctly inse rted .
- The batte ries cou ld be weak, replac e them.

Check that the optional AD-24E S adapter is cor rectly connected.
The p ower turn s off when tryin g to print - The batte ries are w eak; repl ace al l batt erie s.
- Check that the batte ries are inserted co rrectly .
When the label i s printed out, there is too
mu ch ma rg in o n bo th si des o f t he t ex t.
See ‘Set margi n (tape margin)’ in this user's guide and selec t
[Half] or [Narrow] to have smaller margins for your label.
The m achin e ha s “l ocked up” ( i.e ., no thin g
happen s whe n a key is pr essed , even
thoug h the mac hine is on).
Refer to ‘RESETTING THE P-TOUCH’.

The ma chine does no t print or print ing is
blurr y .
- Check that the tape cas sette is inse rted correctl y .
- If the tape casset te is empty , replac e it.
- Check that the cass ette cov er is pro perly clos ed.
The s ettings an d texts have cleared on
their own .
- Th e bat ter ies ma y be w eak; repl ace them.
- W hen po wer is dis conne cted for more than two
minutes, a ll texts, settings and a ny text file s stored in
the memory will be cleared.
The tape doe s not fee d prope rly or gets
stuck inside the labeller
- Check that the end of t he tape feeds under the tape guide.
- The cutt er lever is pre ssed whi le print ing. Do not t ouch
the cutter lever du ring printi ng.
T o chang e the lan guage set ting Refer to ‘INITIAL SETTINGS’.
A blank horizon tal line appears through
the pr inted labe l.
- There m ay b e some dust on the print head . Remo ve the
tape cassett e and use a dry cotton sw ab to ge ntly wip e
the print head with an up-and- down m otion.
- The print he ad can be cleaned m ore easi ly if the
optional print head cle aning cassette ( TZ-CL3 ) is used.

• I nsert six AA A alkaline batteries ( LR03).
• M ake sure the + and – of the batteries are
positioned correct ly.
Note: Only use new batteries.

finger to turn the to othed whe el in the direct ion of
the ar row on t he ca sset te until there is no s lack .

• I nsert a tape cas sette.
• M ake sure that t he cassette snaps into place.
• C lose the cassette cover.
• A fter you have installed the tape, feed the tape
(see “Feed (tape feed)”) once and then push in
the tap e c utte r lev er to c ut the ta pe.
Note: Use only Brother TZ tapes with this
machine.
RESETTING THE P-TOUCH
Reset the P-touch lab eller if you want to
initiali ze the se ttings or in case t he labell er
does not work properl y.
• Turn o ff the labelle r.
• Hold d own and .
• Whil e holding and , press on ce
to turn O N the label ler.
• Releas e and .
Note: The i nternal me mory is reset, and all
text, se ttings an d stored fi les are
clear ed.

ACCESSORIES
If the cutter blade bec omes blunt af ter repetitive
use and the tape cannot be cut cleanly, replace
with a new cutt er unit (stock n o.TC-5) obtained
from an authorized Brother reseller.
