Answering machine
After following the ‘Getting star ted’ section, your B T Freelance XD5500 answering machine
will be set to Answer & R ecord and is ready to start receiving messages. Press
to switch
the answering machine on and off .
Y ou can select one of the pr e-recorded outgoing messages – Answer & R ecord or Answer
Only or you can recor d your own personalised outgoing message. Y ou can also recor d
memo messages for other users, scr een calls and you can operate the answering machine
remotely . For detailed instructions of all the answering machine feat ures see the online user

Y ou can play back your messages using the base or the handset and you can access many of
the answering machine feat ures using the handset menu, see Section 2 for help.
Listening to your messages/memos via the base
When you have new answe ring machine me ssages, the Mes sages light on the base will flash.
At the base, pr ess
to hea r any new mess ages, or pr ess and hold to hea r all messages .
The oldest m essage is playe d first.
During playback, press:
or to adjust the loudspeaker volume.
to pause/resume playback.
once to repeat the curr ent message, twice to play the previous message.
to skip to the next message. Or press and hold t o play message at fas t speed.
to mark the message f or deletion, you will hear “Message deleted”.
to stop playback.
At the end of playback you will hear ‘End of messages. T o delete all messages, press delete’.
Y ou then have 8 seconds in which you can pr ess:
to delete all messages; or
to cancel message deletion and restor e any messages you have marked f or deletion.
Any messages not deleted are saved.
Caller Display and the calls list
Y ou must subscribe to a Caller Display service for this f eature to work. Y our network provider
may charge you f or this ser vice.
Caller Display allows you to see the number of the person calling you befor e you answer
the phone. The calls list holds details of your last 40 callers, including the phone number
and date and time of the call. If a number matches a stor ed phonebook entr y , the caller’ s
name will alternate with the number .
The calls list also aler ts you to unanswered calls. When you have unanswer ed or ‘new calls’,
the icon will flash in the display .
View the calls list
1. Press
to open the calls list. If there ar e no calls in the lis t, the display shows
EM PTY
.
2. Press or to scr oll through the list. If the icon is displayed, the call was
unanswered; if the
icon is displayed, the call was answered.
3. Press
to see the caller’ s number , press again to see the time and date of the call,
press
again if you want to add the number to your phonebook.

Guarant ee
Y our BT F reelance XD5500 is guarant eed for a
period of 12 months from the date of pur chase.
Subject to the terms listed below , the guar antee
will provide f or the repair of , or at BT’ s or its agent’ s
discretion the option to r eplace the BT F reelance
XD5500, or any component thereof , (other than
batteries), which is identified as faulty or below
standard, or as a result of inf erior workmanship or
materials. Products over 28 days old fr om the date
of purchase may be r eplaced with a refurbished or
repair ed product.
The conditions of this guarantee ar e:
• The guarantee shall only apply t o defects that
occur within the 12 month guarantee period.
• Proof of pur chase is required.
• The equipment is returned t o BT or its agent
as instructed.
This guarantee does not cover any faults or def ects
caused by accidents, misuse, fair wear and tear ,
neglect, tampering with the equipment, or any
attempt at adjustment or repair other than through
approved agents.
This guaran tee doe s not aff ect y our stat utory rights.

Mo st p ro ble ms ar e c aus ed by som eth ing very sim ple an d c an be fix ed wit h a f ew sim ple ch eck s:
• Make sur e both the mains power adaptor cable and telephone line cord ar e plugged into
the correct sock ets and plugged in at the wall.
• Make sur e you use all the cables and batteries that came in the box, not those fr om a
previous pr oduct.
• If you experience poor speech quality or interference, mak e sure the product is not
located too close to other electrical appliances. This can also help impr ove the handset
range fr om the base.
• Make sur e you charge the batteries f or at least 24 hour s bef ore first use to ensure
maximum battery per formance. The charge capacity of the batt eries will decrease
over time.
Using your BT Fr eelance XD5500 on a broadband Internet enabled line?
Remember t o plug the phone into the wall socket via an ADSL micr ofilter if you have
broadband Internet on your phone line, otherwise you may have problems with this
product and your br oadband ser vice. Additional BT ADSL micr ofilters can be purchased
from www .shop.bt.com
