ENGLISH
The Minx Xi is powered b y our Stream Magic platform and is able t o receive and
play back media fr om several distinct types of source. Here we ha ve att empted t o
give an ov erview of the various types of service available and the t erminology you
may encount er .
Internet Radio
These are 'radio' stations broadcast o ver the interne t. Currently the Stream
Magic range can access about 20,000 internet radio stations all sorted by us
into Location, Language and Genre. The list of a vailable stations is constantly
maintained and automatically updated t o your unit via the int ernet. If you regist er
on the Stream Magic website (www.stream-magic.com) you will also be able to
browse the stations and se t presets on your units fr om your PC.
Y ou can also add stations to y our units that are currently not in the Stream Magic's
Radio database, suggest new stations t o us and more. There are also links and
help for setting up thir d-party Streaming Ser vices from a wide variety of other
suppliers. Other Stream Magic features will be launched in the future, check the
website fr om time to time t o see the latest de velopments.
Streaming Services
Streaming Services are similar to Internet Radio but come fr om other suppliers and
often have an element of int eraction with the user . Because Streaming Services
generally allow the user some choice o ver the content the y listen t o, they are also
licensed differently to iRadio by the music companies and often each service only
has arrangements in certain countries and may also charge a subscription for
membership.
Examples of such services are Aupeo!, Pandora, Rhapsody , SIRIUS/XM, Live365
and others. All allow some contr ol of the content fr om 'play me something that
sounds like U2' t o the ability to select and pla y whole albums of your choice. Some
also offer the ability to download cont ent for use off-line as well.
The Minx Xi supports many of these ser vices, navigat e to Streaming Services on
the unit for a list or e ven bett er check out our websit e at www .stream-magic.com
for more details of which services are av ailable in your area, what they do and
how to sign up. These services come from thir d parties and although we suppor t
connections to them the y do not come from us and w e are not responsible for their
service in any way . Y our account will be with the ser vice, we are merely acting as
a website t o make the connection sim pler and more conv enient plus we support
the correct software on our unit to allow pla yback and browsing of their cont ent.
Network Media
The Minx Xi supports a wide range of compressed formats; MP3, AAC, WMA and
Ogg Vorbis le types are all supported, plus for true audiophile use, the Minx Xi also
supports either uncompressed PCM (in a W A V container) or losslessly compressed
FLAC, both can contain fr om 1 6-bits/44.1kHz fr om CDs right up to 2 4-bit/96kHz f or
"better than CD quality" fr om suitable download sit es.
Note: For this t o work your server will also need t o support the CODEC you wish to
play as some ha ve limitations and ma y not serve FLAC f or instance. Alwa ys check
that the server you wish to use also supports your fa voured CODECs.
Also for lossless/uncom pressed formats both the server and netw ork connection
will need to sustain the high bitrate necessary .
Note: It is not recommended to use Wi-Fi connections for cont ent above
16-bits/44. 1kHz/48kHz if lossless/uncompressed.
USB Media
The Minx Xi also supports local media from USB Flash-disks or USB hard-drives and
has two USB1. 1 ports for this purpose; one on the front and one on the back. Here
the Minx Xi simply bro wses the folders present on the media attached and displa ys
them. This feature is pr ovided f or conv enient access to t emporary storage devices.
It is howe ver highly recommended that UPnP is used f or continued use of stored
media as the UPnP system is able t o support album ar t, sophisticated content
browsing and lt ering and other f eatures not possible with simple f older bro wsing.
Podcasts
Podcasts are archiv ed audio recordings do wnloadable over the internet. Often
podcasts are recordings of pre vious live broadcasts or episodic cont ent.
The Minx Xi supports various third par ty podcast services, navigate t o Podcasts
on the unit for the list a vailable in your area. In addition the Minx Xi supports your
own personal choice of podcasts where you kno w its URL (weblink) via the Stream
Magic portal, see later section.
Bluetooth
The Minx Xi is supplied with our BT100 Blue tooth adapt or which allows direct
wireless streaming of audio from man y phones, tablets and laptop PCs.
Bluetooth audio no t only allows playback fr om the native music pla yback features of
those devices but also fr om any streaming service Apps that you hav e downloaded
to them.
In this way y ou can simply download and use Apps such as Spo tify , Napster ,
Pandora, Rhapsody or others on your Bluet ooth device and direct playback to y our
Minx Xi for the best possible sound q uality .
Overview
IMPORT ANT! Make sure that the unit is off before making any connections. And
also when plugging and unplugging devices t o the Minx Xi.
Network connections
Before y ou can use your Minx Xi f or iRadio/Streaming you must hav e the follo wing:
• A br oadband internet connection (such as ADSL) t o a suitable internet service
pro vider (ISP).
• A network connection either wirelessly via 802.1 1b/g or n Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet
connection (10 or 1 00 M bits/sec via an RJ45 connection).
Note: If you wish t o play 2 4/48 or 2 4/96 cont ent from a UPnP server , a wired
Ethernet connection will be required as the high data rate of these les is beyond
most Wi-Fi networks capability .
In many cases the br oadband modem, rout er and wireless access point will be a
single combined unit supplied by your Int ernet Service Provider or bought fr om a
computer st ore.
If your wireless network is congured to use Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) or Wi-Fi
Prot ected A ccess (WP A) data encryption then you will need to kno w your WEP or WP A
ke y so you can get the Minx Xi to communi cat e with the network.
IMPORT ANT :
Before you continue, mak e sure that your wireless access point or rout er is
powered up and working with y our broadband interne t service (use your computer
to verify this). T o get this par t of the system working y ou must read the instructions
supplied with the wireless access point or router .
The Minx Xi can be congured to connect to a Wired or Wireless network or has
a (de fault) Auto se tting. In Auto the Minx Xi looks f or a each connection type
and selects whichever is present. Y ou can also f orce the unit to one or the other
connection type, see later Settings section.
Connecting to a wired network
Plug one end of a ne twork cable (Category 5/5E straight through Ethernet cable)
into the LAN port on the back of the unit.
Broadband R outer/Modem
Internet
Ethernet cable
Note: Only connect the LAN port of the player t o an Ethernet port that suppor ts
10BASE- T or 1 00BASE- TX. Connecting to an y other ports or jacks, such as a phone
jack, can damage the unit
The Minx Xi should automatically connect to y our network as belo w via DHCP; this
means it will be given an IP address by y our rout er automatically .
