3. SETTING UP THE APPLIANCE

Please note:

• The rst time you use the appliance, rinse with hot water

all removable accessories which may come into contact

with water or milk.

• The rst time you use the machine, the water circuit is

empty and the appliance could be very noisy. The noise

becomes less as the circuit lls.

• Coee has been used to factory test the appliance and it

is therefore completely normal for there to be traces of

coee in the mill. The machine is, however, guaranteed to

be new.

1. Connect the appliance to the mains electricity supply (g.

1) and make sure the main switch (A9) at the back of the

appliance is in the I position (g. 2);

2. "Language": press the scroll arrows (B3) or

(B5) until the required language is displayed, then press

(B4) to conrm.

Follow the instructions indicated on the appliance display:

3. Remove the water tank (A12) (g. 3), ll to the MAX line

(marked on the tank) with fresh water (g. 4, then put the

tank back in the appliance (g. 5);

4. Check that the hot water spout (E) is inserted on the con-

nection nozzle (A15) (g. 6) and place a container holding

a minimum of 600 ml underneath (g. 7);

5. Press (B4) to conrm: The appliance delivers water

from the spout (g. 8) then goes o automatically.

Now rinse the milk circuit as follows:

6. Turn the machine on again by pressing the button

(A7) (g. 9). The appliance performs an automatic preheat

and rinse cycle which cannot be interrupted;

7. Fill the milk container (D6) with water up to the MAX level;

8. Place the lid back on the milk container;

9. If present, extract the hot water spout by pressing the re-

lease button (E1) (g. 18);

10. Attach the container to the connection nozzle and push

as far as it will go (g. 19). The machine emits a beep (if

enabled);

11. Turn the froth adjustment dial (D2) to the (no froth)

position;

12. Place a container with a minimum capacity of 600 ml

under the milk spout (D3);

13. Now deliver three consecutive "Hot milks":

• ESAM42X.4Y: Press (B5) and select "Hot milk".

Then conrm by pressing (B4).

• ESAM42X.8Y: Press (B11).

Please note:

At the end of each delivery, press (B2) to cancel the

clean milk container message.

14. Extract the milk container.

The coee machine is now ready for normal use.

Please note:

• The rst time you use the appliance, you need to make 4 - 5

espresso coees before it starts to give satisfactory results.

1. To enjoy your coee even more and improve the perfor-

mance of your appliance, we recommend installing a water

softener lter (C4) as described in section "15. Water sof-

tener lter". If your model is not provided with a lter, you

can request one from De'Longhi Customer Services.

4. TURNING THE APPLIANCE ON

Please note:

Before turning the appliance on, make sure the main switch

(A9) on the back of the appliance is pressed (g. 2).

Each time the appliance is turned on, it performs an automatic

preheat and rinse cycle which cannot be interrupted. The appli-

ance is ready for use only after completion of this cycle.

Danger of burns!

During rinsing, a little hot water comes out of the coee spouts

(A16) and is collected in the drip tray (A22) underneath. Avoid

contact with splashes of water.

• To turn the appliance on, press the button (A7) (g.

9).

• After heating, the appliance automatically performs a rinse

cycle. As well as heating the boiler, this also heats the in-

ternal circuits by circulating hot water.

The appliance is ready for use when the main screen appears.
