Wha t is a prog ramme r?
... an e xplanati on for househo lders
Progr amme rs allow you to set ‘On’ and ‘Of f ’ time
per iods . Some model s swit ch the cent ral heat ing and
dome st ic hot water on and of f at the same ti me, while
oth ers allow th e domes tic hot wat er and heatin g to
come on and go of f at dif fer ent time s.
Set th e ‘On’ and ‘Of f ’ time per iod s to sui t your own
life st y le. On some prog ramme rs you mus t also set
whe ther you want th e heating and hot wa ter to run
cont inuou sly, run under the cho sen ‘On’ and ‘O f f ’
heat ing per iods , or be pe rmane ntl y off.
The tim e on t he progr ammer mus t be corr ec t. Som e
t ype s have to be adju st ed in spring and aut umn at the
chan ges bet we en Greenw ich Mean Tim e and Brit ish
Summ er Time.
Y ou may be able to tempor aril y adjus t the heatin g
prog ramme, for exam ple, ‘Over ride ’ , ‘ A dvan ce’ or
‘Bo os t ’ . These are exp lained in the manu fac t urer ’s
ins tr uc tio ns.
The hea ting will not wor k if the room ther mos ta t has
swi tch ed the heat ing of f. Also, if you have a hot-w ater
c ylind er , the water hea ting
will not wor k if the cyli nder
the rmos t at dete c ts tha t the
hot wate r has reache d the
cor rec t temp erat ure.
W h at i s a ro om t h e r mo sta t ?
... an e xplanati on for househo lders
A room ther mos ta t simply sw itc hes the hea ting
sy ste m on an d of f as ne ces sar y. It works by sens ing
the air temp erat ure, swi tchin g on t he heatin g when
the air temp erat ure fall s below the ther mos t at set t ing,
and swi tchi ng it of f once this set tem pera ture has
bee n reached .
T urni ng a ro om ther mos ta t to a highe r set tin g will not
make the room heat up any fas ter. H ow quickl y the
room hea ts up depe nds on the desi gn of t he heati ng
sy ste m, for example, the size of boile r and radiat ors .
Nei ther doe s the set t ing af fec t how quic kly the roo m
coo ls down. T urnin g a roo m therm os tat to a lower
set ting wil l result in the room bei ng contro lled at a
lower tem pera ture, and saves en ergy.
The hea ting sy st em will not work if a time swi tch or
prog ramme r has swit ched it of f.
The way to set and use your room th ermo st at is to
find the lowe st temp era ture se t ting tha t you ar e
comf or t able wit h, and then leave it alone to do it s job.
The be st way to do this is to s et the room the rmos t at
to a low te mper atur e – say 18ºC – and then tur n it up
by one degre e each day until you are comfor t abl e
wit h the tempe rat ure. Y o u won’t have to ad jus t the
the rmos t at fur t her. Any adju st ment ab ove this set ti ng
will was te ener gy and cos t you more money.
If y our heating sys tem is a boiler wi th radiator s, there
will usually be only one room thermos tat to control the
whole hous e. But y ou can have dif ferent temperatures
in individual rooms by ins talling thermos tatic radiator
valves ( TRVs ) on individual radiators. If you don’t
have TRVs, you should choose a temperature that is
reasonable for the whole house. If you do have TRVs,
you can choose a slightly higher sett ing to m ake sure
that e ven the coldes t room is comfor table, then prevent
any overheating i n other rooms by adjusting the TRVs.
Room the rmos t at s need a free flow of air to sense
the temp era ture, so they mus t not be covered by
cur t ains or blo cked by furni ture. Nea rby elec t ric
fires , televis ions, wal l or t able lamp s may pre vent the
the rmos t at from wor king prop erl y .
W h at i s a cyl i n d e r t he r m o sta t ?
... an e xplanati on for househo lders
A cyl inder the rmo st at swi tche s on and off th e heat
supp ly from the boi ler to the hot-wa ter cy linder. I t
work s by sensing th e temper ature of the wat er inside
the c ylind er , swi tchin g on t he water hea ting when th e
temp erat ure fall s below the ther mos t at set t ing, and
swi tchi ng it of f once this set tem pera ture has bee n
reac hed.
T urni ng a c ylin der ther mos t at to a hig her set t ing will
not make the water hea t up any fa s ter . How quic kly the
wate r heat s up de pend s on t he design of the hea ting
sy ste m, for example, the size of boile r and the heat
exchan ger insid e the cyl inder.
The wat er heatin g will not work if a time swi tch or
prog ramme r has swit ched it of f. And the c ylin der
the rmos t at will not alway s switc h the boiler of f,
bec aus e the boiler som etim es need s to hea t the
rad iator s.
Cylinder th ermo st at s are usuall y fit ted bet we en one
quar t er and one third of the way up t he cy linder. T he
c ylind er therm os tat wil l have a temp erat ure sc ale
marke d on i t, and it shoul d be s et at bet wee n 60C and
65C, the n lef t to do i ts job. Thi s temper atur e is hig h
enou gh to kill of f harmf ul bac teri a in th e water , bu t
rai sing the temp era ture of the st ored hot wate r any
highe r will result in was ted ene rgy and incre ase the
ris k of s cald ing.
If you have a bo iler cont rol ther mos t at, it sho uld
alway s be set to a high er temper at ure than that of the
c ylind er therm os tat . In mos t boiler s, a single boile r
the rmos t at cont rols the temp era ture of water se nt
to both th e cylin der and radia tor s, alth ough in some
the re are two sep arate bo iler ther mos t at s.
