What is blood pressur e?
Blood pressur e is the pressur e created in the blood vessels by each heart beat.
When the heart contracts (= systole) and pumps blood into the arteries, it brings
about a rise in pressur e. The highest value is known as the systolic pressur e and
is the first value to be measured. When the car diac muscle relaxes to take in fr esh
blood, the pressur e in the arteries also falls. Once the arteries are r elaxed, a
second reading is taken – the diastolic pr essure.
How is blood pressur e measured?
The ecomed BW-80E is a blood pressur e unit which is used to measure blood
pressur e from the wrist. The measur ement is carried out by a micropr ocessor ,
which, via a pressur e sensor , measures the vibrations resulting fr om the inflation
and deflation of the cuff over the artery .

W ARNING
Blood pressur e that is too low repr esents just as great a health
risk as blood pressur e that is too high! Fits of dizziness may lead
to dangerous situations arising (e.g. on stairs or in traf fic)!
Influencing and evaluating readings
• Measure your blood pressure several times, then r ecord and compar e the
results. Do not draw any conclusions fr om a single reading.
• Y our blood pressur e readings should always be evaluated by a doctor who is
also familiar with your personal medical history . When using the unit regularly
and recor ding the values for your doctor , you should visit the doctor from time
to time to keep him updated.
• When taking readings, r emember that the daily values are influenced by
several factors. Smoking, consumption of alcohol, drugs and physical exertion
influence the measured values in various ways.
• Measure your blood pr essure befor e meals.
• Before taking r eadings, allow yourself at least 5-10 minutes rest.
• If the systolic and diastolic readings seem unusual (too high or too low) on
several occasions, despite correct use of the unit, please inform your doctor .
This also applies to the rare occasions when an irr egular or very weak pulse
prevents you fr om taking readings.
Starting up
Insert / replace batteries

Fitting the cuff
1. Attach the clean cuf f to the left wrist which is fr ee from clothing with the palm
of the hand facing upwards (fig.1).
2. Ther e should be a gap of appr ox. 1 cm between the cuff and the palm of the
hand (fig.2).
3. Pr ess the V e lcro tape firmly ar ound the wrist ensuring that it is not so tight that
it could falsify the measured r esult (fig.3).
Correct position for taking r eadings
• Carry out the measurement whilst seated.
• Relax your arm and place it comfortably , on a table for instance.
• Raise the wrist so that the cuff of the monitor is at heart level (fig.4,
position a = too high, b = correct, c = too low).
• Keep still during the measurement: not move and do not talk as this may alter
the measurements.
T aking a blood pressur e measurement
After the cuff has been appr opriately positioned, the measurement can begin:
1. Switch the unit on by pr essing the button
.
2. If the button
is pressed, all display characters ar e shown (display test).
This test can be used to check that the display is indicating properly and in full.
3. The unit is r eady for measur ement and the number 0 flashes for 2 seconds. It
automatically inflates the cuff slowly in or der to measure your blood pr essure.
The rising pressur e in the cuff is shown on the display .
4. The unit inflates the cuf f until suf ficient pressur e has built up for a
measurement. Then the unit slowly r eleases air from the cuf f and carries
out the measurement. When the device detects the signal, the heart symbol
on the display starts to flash.
5. When the measur ement is finished, the cuf f is deflated completely . The
systolic and diastolic blood pressur e and the pulse value with the pulse symbol
appear on the display
. It will read in kPa as unit when you choose
kPa. The blood pressur e indicator
flashes next to the relevant colour ed bar
depending on the WHO blood pressur e classification. If the unit has detected
an irregular heartbeat, the arrhythmia display
also flashes.
W ARNING
Do not take any therapeutic measures on the basis of a self
measurement. Never alter the dose of a medicine pr escribed
by a doctor .
6. The r eadings ar e automatically saved in the selected memory ( or ). Up to
90 measured values with date and time can be stor ed in each memory .
7. The measur ement r eadings remain on the display . The unit switches off
automatically after approx. 3 minutes if no buttons ar e pressed. The unit may
also be switched off using the button
.
Discontinuing a measurement
If it is necessary to interrupt a blood pressur e measurement for any r eason
(eg. the patient feels unwell) the button
can be pressed at any time. The
device immediately decrease the cuf f pressur e automatically .
Displays of stored values
This unit features 2 separate memories, each with a capacity of 90 memory slots.
Results are automatically stor ed in the memory selected by the user . Press the
button
when power off, to call up the measur ed values stored. All values
average appear on the display . Pressing the button
again, the last
mea sur ement value will be shown. Repeatedly pr essing the button
displays the respective values measur ed previously . If you have reached the final
entry and do not press a button, the unit automatically switches itself of f after
approximately 3 min. in memory r ecall mode. Memory recall mode can be exited
at any time by pressing the button
, which will also switch the unit off. The
oldest value is deleted if 90 measured values have been stor ed in the memory
and a new value is saved.
Memory - clear of measurements
If you are sur e that you want to permanently remove all stor ed memories, press
and hold the button
to enter into setting mode when power off. Pr ess
button
again for 7 times until CL appears. Pr ess the button
, CL will
flash for 3 times to clear all the memories. After this press button

Proper use
• The device is intended for measuring the blood
pressur e from the wrist of an adult.
Contraindication
• The device is not suitable for measuring the
blood pressur e of children. Ask your doctor
before using it on older childr en.
• The device is not suitable for persons with
arrhythmia, diabetes, cardiovascular pr oblems
or who have had a stroke.
Common factors of wrong measur ement
• Please keep quiet for 5-10 minutes and avoid
eating, drinking alcohol, smoking, exercising
and bathing before taking measur ement. All
these factors will influence the measurement
result.
• Remove watch or other ornaments from the
measured wrist.
• Always measure on the same wrist (normally left).
• T ake measurement regularly at the same time of
every day , as blood pressure changes even during
the day .
• All efforts by the patient to support their arm can
increase blood pr essure.
• Make sure you are in a comfortable, r elax position
and do not activate any of the muscles in the
measurement arm during measur ement. Use a
cushion for support if necessary .
• If the wrist lies lower or higher than the heart, a
false reading will be obtained.
• A loose or open cuff causes false reading.
• W ith repeated measur ements , blood accumulates
in the wrist which can lead to false reading.
Consecutive blood pressur e measurements should
be repeated after 1 minute pause or after the
arm has been held up in order to allow the
accumulated blood to flow away .
