C onnec ting the base station
¤ Inser t the phone cable into the
connection socket 1 at the rear of
the base until it clicks into place and
feed under the cable prot ection.
¤ Inser t the power cable f or the
power adapter in to the connection
socket 2 a t the rear of the base and
rotate the righ t-angle plug under
the cable protection.
¤ Connect the power adapter 3 .
¤ Connect the phone jack 4 .
Please note:
¤ T he pow er adapter must alway s be
connected, as the phone will not
operate without a pow er supply .
¤ Use only the power adapt er and
phone cord supplied. Pin
connections on telephone cables
can vary.
Connecting the handset charger (if included)
¤ Connect the flat plug to the charg ing cradle1 .
¤ Plug the power adapt er into the power socket2 .
If you have t o remove the plug fr om the charger
again:
¤ Disconnect the power adapter fr om the mains
power supply .
¤ Pr ess the release button 3 and disconnect the
plug4 .

Q: There is no dial t one.
A: Press call butt on for 2 seconds (long pr ess) to obtain dial tone.
A short press opens the redial list.
Q: The line is crackling / not clear .
A: Have y ou used the new line cable provided? Please do not use an old cable .
Q: The display is not clear / seems t o be broken.
A: T he display is pr otected by a plastic film, please make sure you ha ve remov ed
the protective film.
Q: The handset is not register ed.
A: If your handset is not register ed, please follo w the Registration handset proc edure.

Q: The caller ID is not working .
A: Have y ou subscribed to this service (CLIP) from your pr ovider?
Q: Message indicator flashing and I cannot retriev e my message .
A: Message indicator will flash to indicate missed calls as w ell as new messages of text mes-
sages. (see user manual)
Please check:
Have y ou used the phone cord supplied
Have y ou fully inserted the power cable into the base sta tion
Have y ou inserted the batteries correctly
Have y ou charged the battery for 8.5 hours

Pr eparing the handset
Charging the battery
The battery is supplied with a par tial charge. Please char ge it completely befor e use.
¤ Charge the handset in the base for 8.5 hours.
Please note
The handset must only be placed in the designa ted base or charger .
¤ Inser t the batteries with
the polarity in the right
direction (for corr ect +/-
direction, see diagram).
¤ First orienta te the battery
cover with the side tabs
fitting into the slots on
the inside of the casing.
¤ T hen press the co ver until
it clicks into place .
If you have to open the ba t-
ter y cover:
¤ Grip the side hollows and
slide the battery cover
diagonally upwards.
The display is prot ected by a plastic film. Please remove the pr otective film!

Open the battery cover and insert the rubber seal into the groov e.

Setting the date and time
Set the date/time so that the correct date and time can be assigned t o incoming calls, and so
that you can use the alarm.
¤ Pr ess the key Time below the display scr een to
open the input field.
(If you have alr eady set the date/time, open the
input field via the menu:

The submenu Date/T ime is shown on the display .
¤ T he active input position flashes.
Enter the day , month and y ear as an
8-digit number via the keypad,
e.g.
14102014
for 14.10.2014.
If you wish to change the input position,
pr
ess left u or right v on the control key .
¤ Pr ess the down control key t o switch to the
time input field.
¤ Enter the hours and minutes in 4-digit format
via the keypad e.g ., 0715 for
07:15 am.
Change the input position with the control key
if necessary.
¤ Pr ess the key Save below the display screen t o
save the entry .

Handset registr ation
Handsets contained in the package have already been r egistered t o the base.
If, ho wever , a handset has not been r egister ed (display "Please register handset " or "Plac e
handset in base"), you must reg ister it to the base.
if your handset is flashing the text "No Base " then it can be that:
u Y our base station is not switched on, please check if the power supply is c onnected
properly .
u T her e is too much distance between the handset and the base.
If the handset has not been pre-registered or you wan t to register an additional handset
to your base sta tion, use the registration pr ocedure below .
u Aut omatically registering the Gigaset CL540 handset
to base station:
¤ Place the handset in the base.
If automatic registration does not w ork, the handset
will have to be r egistered manually .
u Manually registering the handset:
¤ On the base: Pr ess and hold (min. 3 seconds) the
Registration/paging key 1 .
¤ On the CL540 handset, press the displa y key
Register.
Or:

Display shows: Sear ching for a base in registra tion mode.
The connection to the base will be established; this may
take some time.
¤ Enter the system PIN if required (factory setting: 0000)
¤ OK
Y ou can r egister up t o six handsets to your base . Y ou can
also register other Gigaset handsets and handsets fr om
other devices with GAP functionality.
Dial T one
The dial tone will only be heard when pr essing the call button c for 2 sec onds. A short press
will open the redial list.
Message lists
Any messages you r eceive are sa ved in the message lists. An
advisory tone sounds as soon as a new entr y appears on a list.
The Message key also flashes. Icons f or message types and the
number of new messages are shown on the idle displa y .
New messages available:
u à On the answer machine (only CL540A)/

u ™ In the missed calls list
u o In the missed alarms list
Open the message list by pressing the Message key f.
