Operation
Basic Operation
Once you ha ve complet ed the setup and configuration
of the A VR, it is simple to operat e and enjoy . The
following instructions should be followed for you to
maximize your enjoymen t of your new r eceiver:
T urning the AVR On or Off
When using the A VR for the first time, y ou must t
press the Main P ower Switch
on the front
panel to turn the unit on. This places the unit in a
Standby mode, as indicat ed by the orange color
of the Po wer Indicator
. Once the unit is
in Standby , you may begin a listening session
by pressing the S ystem P ower C ontrol
or
the Source button
on the fron t panel, or
the A VR Selector on the Remote Con trol
,
.
Note that the P ower Indicator
will turn
blue. This will turn the unit on and r eturn it to
the input sourc e that was last used . The unit may
also be turned on from S tandby by pressing any
of the Source Selector buttons on the remote

Note
: After pressing the the DVD or HDMI 1 Button
to turn the unit on, press the A VR Selec tor
,
to hav e the remot e contr ol all of the A VR functions.
Please refer t o the Remote F unction List on page 7 for
an overview.
T o turn the unit off at the end of a listening session,
simply press the S ystem Po wer C ontrol
on the
fron t panel or the Po wer Off Button
on the
remot e.
When the r emote is used to turn the unit “ off” it is
actually placing the system in a Standby mode, as
indicated by the orange c olor of the P ower Indicat or
.
When away from home for an extended period of time
it is always a good idea to c ompletely turn the unit off
with the fron t panel Main Po wer Swit ch
.
Note: All preset memories may be lost if the unit is
left turned off with the Main Po wer Swit ch
for
more than two w eeks.
Using the Sleep Timer
T o progr am the A VR for automatic turn-off, pr ess t
the Sleep Button

on the remot e. Each pr ess
of the button will incr ease the time before shut
down in the following sequence:
When the pr ogrammed sleep time has elapsed, the
unit will automatically turn off (t o Standby mode).
Note that the fr ont panel display will dim t o one half
brightness when the Sleep function is programmed .
T o cancel the Sleep function, press and hold the Sleep
Button

normal brightness and the

Source Selec tion
T o select a source , press any of the t S ource
Selector buttons on the remote

The input sour ce may also be changed by pr essing

the fron t-panel Input Source Selector button
. Each press of the butt on will move the input
selection through the list of available inputs .
As the input is changed, the A VR will auto matically t
switch to the digital input (if selected), surr ound
mode and speaker configur ation that w ere en ter ed
during the configuration pr ocess for that source .
The fr ont-panel

may be used to connect a device
such as a video game or camcor der to your home
entertainment system on a temporary basis.
As the input sourc e is changed, the new input t
name will appear in the Main Information
Display
.
When a pur e audio input (CD , T uner , T ape , 6/8

Channel Input) is selected, the last video input
used remains r outed to the
Video Out puts
and Video Monitor Output
. This
permits simultaneous viewing and listening to
differen t sourc es.
When a V ideo sourc e is selected, its audio signal t
will be fed to the speakers and the video signal
for that input will be rout ed to the appr opriate
Monitor Output Jack
and will be viewable
on a T V monitor c onnected to the A VR. If a
component video sour ce is connected t o the
Video 1
or Video 2
Component
Inputs, it will be rout ed to the Component
Video Outputs
. Make certain that your TV
is set to the pr oper input to view the appr opriate
video signal (composit e or component video).
Controls and U se of Headphones
Adjust the volume t o a comfortable level using t
the fron t panel Volume C ontrol
or remot e
V olume Up/Down
buttons.
T o temporarily silenc e all speaker outputs pr ess the t
Mute button
. This will interrupt the output
to all speakers and the headphone jack, but it will
not affect any recor ding or dubbing that may be
in progr ess. Press the Mute butt on
again to
return t o normal operation.
During a listening session you ma y wish to adjust
t
the Bass Control and T reble Control to suit
your listening tast es or room ac oustics.
T o set the output of the A VR so that the output is
t
“ flat, ” with the T one controls de-activated, pr ess
the T one Mode button
once or twice so that

appear momentarily in
the Main Information Display
. T o return
the tone contr ols to an active condition, press the
T one Mode
button once or twice so that
the wor ds

momentarily appear in the
Main Information Display
.
T o change the Bass or T reble Con trol settings pr ess t
the T one Mode Button
until the wor d
Bass or T reble appear momentarily in the Main
Information Display
. Pr ess the OK Button
followed by the

the setting. When done , press the T one Mode
Button
again to exit the T one Mode Menu.
For priva te listening , plug the 6.3 mm stereo t
phone plug from a pair of st ereo headphones in to
the fron t panel Headphone Jack
. Note that
when the headphone ’ s plug is connected, the w ord
will scroll onc e across the Main
Information Display
and all speakers will
be silenced. When the headphone plug is r emoved,
the audio feed to the speakers will be r estored.
When the headphones ar e in use, you ma y take
t
advantage of the Dolby Headphone modes to
bring added spaciousness to headphone listening .
Pr ess the Dolby Mode Select Button

the Surround Mode Group Selector
to
cycle through the thr ee Dolby Headphone modes
to select the one that you pr efer .
Surround Mode Selec tion
One of the most impor tant fea tures of the A VR is
its ability to repr oduce a full multichannel surr ound
sound field from digital sour ces, analog matrix
surround enc oded programs and standar d stereo or
even mono pr ograms. In all , a total of fifteen listening
modes are a vailable on the A VR.
Selection of a surround mode is based on personal
taste, as w ell as the type of program sour ce mat erial
being used.
For example , motion pictures, CD’ s or TV programs
bearing the logo of one of the major surround
encoding proc esses, such as Dolby Surr ound should
be played in either the Dolby Pr o L ogic II Movie (with
movies) or Music (with music) surround mode or with
the Harman Kardon ex clusive Logic 7 Movie Mode, to
crea te a full range discr ete 5.1 channel surr ound signal
from surr ound encoded pr ograms with a ster eophonic
left and right r ear signal, just as it was r ecorded in real
life (e.g . sound being recor ded from left r ear side will
be heard fr om that side only.
