USER GUIDE
The Chronother m Modulation is designed to provide automatic time and
temperature control of heating systems. These instructions explain ho w to
program and operate your Chronotherm Modulation.
Chronother m Modulation can be used with all OpenTherm
®
compatible boilers .
The OpenTherm
®
compatib le boilers are marked with O T logo sho wn belo w .
Chronother m Modulation is a programmab le thermostat that controls your heating
system so that you can ha v e comfortable temperatures when y ou are at home and
energy savings when y ou are out. T o ensure that your heating system is operating
in most efficient wa y Chronotherm Modulation not only switches the boiler on and
off but also modulates the flame to f inely match the heating output of the heating
appliance to the current heat demand.
T o maximise energy efficiency Chronother m Modulation has b uild -in Adaptiv e
Intelligent Recovery function Instead of switching the heating on at the set time
ev ery day , the controller will delay the star t time to the latest possible moment, so
that unnecessary heating is avoided. All y ou hav e to do is set the time b y which
you w ant to be warm and Chronother m Modulation will then decide when to turn
the heating on.
1 Day b utton allows y ou to set correct da y of the week.
2 The display continuously sho ws inf ormation about time, day of the week and
temperature. The Energy meter allows y ou to see the current f i ring rate of the
boiler . A radiator or tap symbol is sho wn when boiler is servicing central
heating or domestic hot water .
3 These buttons are used to adjust the temper ature lev el. Y ou can operate
these buttons also when the flap is closed.
4 “
” Enquiry button is used to displa y the set room temperature le v el and the
outside temperature (only if the outside temperature sensor is connected to
your boiler).
5 The holiday function allows setting of a setbac k temperature f or a period of
maximum 99 da ys. The same function can also be used as timed prog ram
ov erride providing energy sa vings or extended comf ort period.
6 These buttons are used to prog ram up to six temperature changes per da y .
7 Slider position defines the operating mode . When slider is set to A U TO the
Chronotherm will operate according to the program.
8 Time adjustment buttons are used f or cloc k and temperature change
settings.
9 The copy b utton allows y ou to cop y the time/temperature progr am to the ne xt
da y .
SPECIAL FUNCTIONS
Modulating control
The Chronotherm Modulation continuously adapts the firing rate of the boiler to
the required heat demand. This results in a v ery accurate control of the room
temperature. The modulating control is only possible if the heating appliance is
supporting OpenTher m
®
communications.
OpenTherm
®
communication
The Chronotherm Modulation exchanges inf ormation with the heating appliance
using OpenTherm
®
two-wa y communication protocol.
NO TE: The amount and type of inf ormation that can be displayed as well as
appliance specific inf ormation codes may vary .
Refer to the user manual of the appliance f or this specific information.
Optimizing through the intelligent adaptive reco very (AIR) feature.
T o achiev e the required temperature in the house we typically set the on time f or
the heating system earlier than required. In this way w e can be sure that we will
hav e the comf ortable temperature when we wake up . As w e nev er can guess
precisely when the heating should come on we tend to stay on the sa v e side
setting the on time earlier then required. Consequently we hav e to pa y f or keeping
the house at comfort temperature longer then necessary . The Chronotherm
Modulation solves this prob lem completely . It checks ev ery day how much time is
required to heat up your home . Using this data the Chronotherm Modulation
calculates the precise moment when to start the heating up the next day to
achiev e comfort temperature exactly when you w ant it. Consequently you do not
hav e to tak e the warm up time into account when programming. The Chronotherm
Modulation activates adaptiv e intelligent reco very function before e v ery
programmed temperature le v el increase .
NO TE: After installation Chronotherm will require a couple of days to learn how to
calculate ON times f or a par ticular house.
Program up to six time/temperature periods per da y .
Y ou hav e the possibility to set 6 diff erent periods for each da y of the w eek. The
time/temperature periods are marked with numbers 1 to 6.
The star t time and temperature lev el f or each period is programmab le within the
temperature setting range of 5 to 30°C .
Backup during po wer supply failure
Y our Chronotherm Modulation operates without batteries. The power is supplied
through the communication connection. In case of the mains power loss a
rechargeable bac kup power supply is suff icient to k eep the program and the cloc k
settings for at least 8 hours. If the bac kup supply is e xhausted the display will be
blank and the individual prog ram will be deleted. After the mains supply has been
reestablished the f actory program will be activated and the displa y will flash at
12.00. It will take between 10 and 60 min utes (dependant on the operating
conditions) to charge the backup supply .
The energy meter
If the burner of the boiler is energized, a bar of flames will be shown on the left
side of the display . This allo ws you to chec k at all times at what f iring rate your
boiler is operating. (The percentages in the abov e graph are indicativ e only .
Dependant on the modulation band of your boiler the in betw een values ma y vary)
The radiator or tap symbol indicates if energy is being used f or central heating or
the domestic hot water (if applicab le).
Unique holiday/timer function
The holiday b utton allows y ou to o verride y our normal temperature profile and set
the fi x ed temperature le v el f or a def ined time. Y ou can set the required
temperature f or as long as 99 days or as short as 1 hour .
Intelligent DHW control
If you o wn a boiler that also provides hot water (combi boiler) then the
Chronotherm Modulation can provide additional savings.
In the FROST PRO TECTION or HOLID A Y/TIMER function, the Chronotherm
Modulation will switch off the DHW function or (dependant of the appliance) will
s witch to a savings mode. In this wa y the DHW storage will not be k ept on a high
comfort temperature if this is not necessary .
If desired it is possible to switch off the DHW during the night setbac k period. Y our
installer can set this for y ou.
NO TE: This function is only a vailab le if your boiler is suitab le for this
communication. Consult the user manual of the boiler or ask y our installer .
CONTROLS LA Y OUT
PROGRAMMING Y OUR THERMOST A T
Before y ou start programming
Y ou can program your Chronotherm Modulation only if the mains supply of the
boiler is switched on, the electrical connection to the boiler is made and the
thermostat has been mounted on the wall plate. When the po wer f or the
thermostat is present the display will be activ ated and the clock will start.
NO TE: Operate the k eypad with your f ingertips only . Sharp objects like pens or
pencils can damage the k eypad.
