Glossary of terms

One of the good things about poker is that all players, wherever in the world,

speak the same language. During a tournament, you are only ofﬁ cially allowed

to speak in the language of the country in which the tournament is being played,

so that the tournament leader can make sure that players are not making any

arrangements with one another - which is not allowed! - or in English, which all

players speak to a certain extent. Here is a glossary of poker jargon:

• All-in: if you bet all your chips at once, you are ‘All-in’.

• Ante: a mandatory (small) bet placed before the cards are dealt.

• Bet: an amount wagered.

• Big blind: the player two to the left of the dealer, who has to place a man-

datory bet.

• Board: the face-up community cards on the table, also known as the ‘Flop’.

• Call: matching a bet of another player.

• Check: not placing a bet. This is only permitted as long as no bet has yet

been placed. You can show that you wish to check by knocking on the

table.

• Community cards: the open cards in the middle of the table, also known

as the ﬂ op or the board.

• Dealer Button: a chip without any value used to indicate which player is

the dealer at that moment, if there is no set dealer at the table (as there is

in tournaments. In friendly games, players take it in turns).

• Down Cards or Hole Cards: the two personal cards.

• Draw: an incomplete hand, usually 4 cards of a straight or ﬂ ush.

• Chips: play tokens

• Flop: the ﬁ rst 3 community cards on the table.

• Fold: passing, no longer participating in the game.

• Heads-up: playing one against one

• Hole cards: see Down Cards, the face down or blind cards.

• Kicker: the highest card held which is not used in the poker hand.

• Loose: a player who plays a lot of hands.

• Monster: a good hand which turns out to be unbeatable after the ﬂ op.

• Nuts: the best possible hand at any given moment during the hand.

• Tilt: weak play resulting from emotional instability.

• Off suited: 2 cards of 2 different suits, such as a heart and a spade, etc.

• Outs: cards which improve a non-winning hand.

• Pass: British players often use ‘pass’ when they mean ‘fold’.

• Pocket pair: when a player’s two personal cards are of the same rank.

• Pot: the total number of chips bet.

• Raise: to call and increase the previous bet.

• Reraise: to raise the previous raised bet.

• River: the last card dealt before the last round of betting.
