O ne of the most i mportant things you can do to reduce the likelihood of serious head injuries is to install shock-absorbing protective surfacing

under and around your play equip ment. The protective surfacing should be applied to a depth that is suitable for the equip ment height in accordance with

AST M F 1292. There are di ﬀerent types of surfacing to choose fro m; whichever product you select, follo w these guidelines:

N OTE: Do not install ho me playground equip ment over concrete, asphalt, or any other hard surface. A fall onto a hard surface can result in serious

injury to the equip ment user. Grass and dirt are not considered protective surfacing because wear and environ mental factors can reduce their shock

absorbing e ﬀectiveness. Carpeting and thin mats are generally not adequate protective surfacing. Ground level equip ment such as a sandbox,

activity wall, playhouse or other equip ment that has no elevated play surface – does not need any protective surfacing.

L o os e- Fill M at eri al s:

• Maintain a mini mu m depth of 9 inches of loose-ﬁll materials such as wood mulch/chips, engineered wood ﬁber (E WF), or

shredded/recycled rubber mulch for equip ment up to 8 feet high; and 9 inches of sand or pea gravel for equip ment up to 5 feet high.

N OTE: An initial ﬁll level of 12 inches will co mpress to about a 9-inch depth of surfacing overti me. The surfacing will also co mpact,

displace, and settle, and should be periodically reﬁlled to maintain at least a 9-inch depth.

• Use a mini mu m of 6 inches of protective surfacing for play equip ment less than 4 feet in height. If maintained properly, this should be

adequate. ( At depths less than 6 inches, the protective material is too easily displaced or co mpacted.)

• Use contain ment, such as digging out around the peri meter and/or lining the peri meter with landscape edging. Don’t forget to

account for water drainage.

• Check and maintain the depth of the loose- ﬁll surfacing material. To maintain the right a mount of loose- ﬁll materials, mark the correct

level on play equip ment support posts. That way you can easily see when to replenish and/or redistribute the surfacing.

• D o n ot install loose- ﬁll surfacing over hard surfaces such as concrete or asphalt.

You may be interested in using surfacing other than loose- ﬁll materials – like rubber tiles or poured-in-place surfaces.

• Installations of these surfaces generally require a professional and are not “do-it-yourself” projects.

• Revie w surface speci ﬁcation before purchasing this type of surfacing. Ask the installer/ manufacturer for a report sho wing that the

product has been tested to the follo wing safety standard: AST M F 1292 Standard Speciﬁcation for I mpact Attenuation of Surfacing

Materials within the Use Zone of Playground Equip ment. This report should sho w the speci ﬁc height for which the surface is intended to

protect against serious head injury. This height should be equal to or greater than the fall height – vertical distance bet ween a designated

play surface (elevated surface for standing, sitting, or cli mbing) and the protective surfacing belo w – of your play equip ment.

• Check the protective surfacing frequently for wear.

Pl a c e m e nt:

Proper place ment and maintenance of protective surfacing is essential. Be sure to:

• Extend surfacing at least 6 feet fro m the equip ment in all directions.

• For to-fro s wings, extend protective surfacing in front of and behind the s wing to a distance equal to t wice the height of the

top bar fro m which the s wing is suspended.

• For tire s wings, extend surfacing in a circle whose radius is equal to the height of the suspending chain or rope, plus 6 feet in

all directions.
