ARC: Abbr eviation f or Audio R eturn Channel.
Audio R eturn Channel: The audio r eturn channel which was intr oduced
with the HDMI Standar d 1.4 is used when an audio s ystem with audio
(pr e) amplifier , e.g. L oewe MediaVision 3D , is connect ed to a TV set via
HDMI. The digital audio signal o f the TV set ( e.g. the s ound of the cur-
r ent TV pr ogram ) can be tr ansferr ed to the audio amplifier via the audio
r eturn channel of the HDMI c able. Thus the same c able which is normally
r esponsible for tr ansf erring image data fr om a connect ed media player t o
the TV set tr ansf ers the audio data in the oppo site dir ection. In this way , the
audio r eturn channel make s the cinch cable, which has pr eviously been
r equir ed in addition to the HDMI cable , redundant .
Automatic time contr ol: Also c alled Accurate R ecording. Similar t o
VPS f or analogue stations the automatic time c ontrol monit ors the start
and end times of pr ogr ammes fr om DVB s tations. If these time s deviate
fr om the data pr ogrammed in the timer dat a, the running time of the
r ecor ding is adapted automatic ally . The aut omatic time contr ol is not
supported b y all D VB stations.
A V sock et: Socket for audio and video signals .
A V sourc es: Audio/Video sour c e.
A VI: Abbr eviation f or Audio Video Interle ave , a video cont ainer file for-
mat developed b y Micro soft. A single A VI video file can contain s ever al
audio, video and t ext dat a str eams (thus the name cont ainer format).
B
Band: Name f or a tr ansmission r ange .
Blu-ray Dis c: The follow-up f ormat of DV D . The c ontents of about
five D VDs fit onto one Blu-r ay Disc ( abbr eviat ed BD). Ther efor e , the
Blu-r ay disc pr ovide s enough space for high-r es olution images and
multi-channel sound f ormats.
C
BMP: Abbr eviation for Bitmap , a grid graphics f ormat designed for
Micr osoft W indows and OS / 2 that is wide spre ad and ther efor e sup-
ported b y almost e very popular gr aphics softw are p ackage without
any pr oblems.
C
C A Module: The Conditional Acce ss module contains the c od-
ing sy stem and c ompar es the tr ansmitt ed code with the one on the
Smart Card. If the y match, the appr opriate st ations or pr ogr ammes
ar e decoded.
CEC: Abbr eviation f or Consumer Electr onics Control. CE C pr ovides uni-
ver sal component contr ol functions for ent ertainment electronics de vices
( e.g. S yst em standby , One T ouch Play ). CE C is ref err ed to by L oewe as
Digital Link HD.
Channel (WLAN): Device s that want t o communicat e with each other
hav e to use the same WiF i channel. In Eur ope the WiFi fr equency band
is curr ently divided into 13 channels.
Cinch cable: Cable for tr ansmitting s ound or pictur es.
CI slot: See Common Interfac e.
Client: Also called ne twork client, des cribes an end device such as
your TV s et that is connect ed to the net work and get s data fr om a
(media ) server t o make it acc essible to the us er .
Common Interf ace: The Common Int erface ( CI slot) is a st andar d-
ised int erface . By inserting suitable decoding module s (CA modules)
and a Smart Card c oded digital pr ogrammes c an be used.
Common Interf ace Plus: CI P lus is an advancement o f the Common
Interface s tandard. CI P lus slots ar e in principle downwar d comp atible
to the pr evious CI s tandard, i. e. CA module s and Smar t Car ds accor d-
ing to the p ast CI standar d can continue t o be used in CI Plus slots ,
as far as the pr ogr amme pr ovider permits this. Additionally , ext ended
r egulations apply howev er to CI Plus .
Component: See Component connection.
Component connection: Also r ef erred t o as Component. Connec-
tion wher e the video signal is tr ansf erred via thr ee separ at e (Cinch )
connections. It c omprises the brightness signal Y as well as the colour
diff erenc e signals Pb (blue component) and Pr (r ed componen t).
Conditional A cces s module: See CA module.
D
DHCP: Abbr eviation for Dynamic Ho st Configur ation Pr otocol. DHCP
allow s automatic assignment of IP addr es ses with the aid of a DHCP
server .
DHCP server: Net work service which tak es car e of aut omatic assign-
ment of IP addr esses t o clients.
Digital Link HD: Sy st em for contr olling units via the HDMI connection
of the L oewe TV set when the y have been se t up in a cover ed position.
DMM: Abbr eviation for Digital Mo vie Mode. Whether a st udio rec ord-
ing, live br oadcas t, or featur e film – the br oadcas t images ar e alwa ys

and tr anquillity . By cr eating int ermediate image s, DMM enables perfect
studio qualit y , even with quick mo vements.
DNC: Abbr eviation for “Digital Noise Contr ol”. W eak TV signals ( ana-
logue ) can gener at e disruptive pictur e noise. DNC adjust s the eff ect
of digital nois e reduction t o the pictur e contents .
DNS: Abbr eviation for Domain Name S ystem. R eadable names ( e.g.
www .loe we-int. de) ar e assigned t o numerical IP addre sses. DNS
server s ar e responsible f or the r esolution of r eadable addr esse s into
the corr esponding IP addr ess es.
Dolb y Digital: Digital multi-channel sound. The digital st andard f or
high quality home mo vie syst ems. The individual channels ar e br oad-
cast s epar ately in this standar d. The thr ee fr ont channels right, left
and centr e, the t wo surr ound channels right and left and the ext ernal
subw oofer channels ar e called a 5. 1 signal.
Dolb y Pro Logic: Analogue multi-channel s ound. Converts a Dolby-
coded st er eo signal into a surr ound sound. This usually cont ains four
channels (fr ont left, c entre , fr ont right, surr ound channel). A special
subw oof er channel is not gener ated in this method.
Dolb y Pro Logic II: Analogue multi-channel s ound. Dolby Pr o Logic II
is a further development o f Dolby Pr o Logic. This method g ener ates
a 6-channel spatial sound fr om a st ereo or P r o-Logic signal (fr ont left,
