x Keep at least 2 m away from mobile phones!
We recommend that you stand at least 2 m away
from mobile telephones when operating your mo-
del, as the high output of these devices may cause
interference to your transmitter or RF module. In
general terms we recommend that you switch off
mobile phones and any other equipment which
could affect the concentration of pilots.
ESD notes for electronic sub-assemblies:
The sub-assemblies of radio control trans-
mitters (main circuit board, RF module,
Channel-Check module, Scanner module)
are fitted with electrostatically sensitive
components. These parts can be destroyed or their
useful life shortened if static discharges take place
(potential equalisation through electro-static dis-
charge) when the sub-assembly is touched.
The following protective measures are essential if you
have to handle electrostatically sensitive sub-
assemblies:
x Before fitting or removing such assemblies, equal-
ise the potential difference between yourself and
your environment (e.g. by touching a heating radia-
tor).
x If necessary, open the main device and touch it
over a large area, in order to equalise the potential
relative to the base unit.
x Do not remove the sub-assembly from the conduc-
tive anti-static bag until you have equalised the po-
tential. Avoid touching electronic components or
solder pads directly. Hold the sub-assembly by the
edges of the circuit board only.
x Once removed from the basic device, the sub-as-
sembly should only be stored in the conductive
anti-static bag in which it was delivered. Never al-
low the sub-assembly to make direct contact with a
conventional, non-ESD compatible container made
of foam, Styrofoam or other plastic.
3.2. Range checking
Regular range checks are a very important method of
checking that your radio control system is working
properly, and of detecting changes to the radio sys-
tem’s transmission characteristics. A range check is
particularly important if:
x You install new components in a model, change
the components, or re-arrange their installation.
x You are using components in the model which
have previously been involved in a crash.
x You noticed any irregularity or problem when pre-
viously operating the model.
Important:
x Always carry out the range check with a second
person to help you; he or she can secure the mo-
del and watch what happens (ground vehicles and
boats on the appropriate surface).
x Range checks should only be carried out with the
telescopic aerial fitted to the transmitter, but col-
lapsed completely. Do not use a helical stub ae-
rial for range checking!
x During the range check there should be no other
transmitters switched on. Large-scale metallic ob-
jects such as cars and wire fences will also affect
the test result.
This is the procedure:
x Hold the transmitter in such a position that the ae-
rial is as close to vertical as possible.
Model aircraft:
Stand or hold the model in such a way that the tip
of the receiver aerial is about 1 m above the
ground.
Land-based or water-based models: place the
model on the ground or in the water.
Switch the power system OFF!
x Switch the transmitter and receiver on. Move one
control function (e.g. elevator) constantly and steadily.
This allows you to check that the receiving system
responds to control commands with distinct, regu-
lar movements of the control surfaces.
x Walk away from the model to increase the distance
between the transmitter and the receiving system.
You have reached the range limit when the servos
start to jitter, carry out uncontrolled movements, or
cease responding clearly and evenly to transmitter
control commands.
For standard receivers (without IPD or similar) this
rule applies:
For receivers which carry out no signal checking / cor-
rection (e.g. Pico 3/4, Pico 5/6) slight servo jitter when
close to the range limit is acceptable.
For receivers with IPD, PCM or similar, this rule applies:
If the receiver checks / corrects the signal, it will sup-
press any servo jitter. At the range limit the servo
movements will initially become irregular (faltering
movement). Beyond the range limit the servos will
switch to HOLD mode (maintaining the last com-
manded position) or FAIL-SAFE mode (running to a
pre-programmed position).
!
Repeat the check with the motor running!
Secure the model, and repeat the check with the mo-
tor running. Test the system at various throttle posi-
tions between idle and full-throttle.
Effective range must not be significantly reduced.
The following have a powerful influence on effec-
tive radio range ...
... the ambient conditions:
Range may be reduced by half in mountain bowls
or in the vicinity of public service transmitters, ra-
dar stations or similar apparatus. The ground cha-
racteristics, the type of terrain and the atmospheric
conditions also affect radio range.
... receiver technology and sophistication:
Technically sophisticated receivers have greater
range than simple, cheap, small receivers.
