Important
Read this user manual carefully before y ou use the
appliance and sav e it for future reference.
Danger
Never immerse the iron in water .
W arning
Check if the voltage indicated on the type plate
corresponds to the local mains voltage before you
connect the appliance.
Do not use the appliance if the plug, the mains cord
or the appliance itself shows visib le damage , or if the
appliance has been dropped or leaks.
If the mains cord is damaged, y ou must hav e it
replaced by Philips, a ser vice centre author ised by
Philips or similar l y qualied per sons in order to a void
a hazard.
Never lea ve the appliance unattended when it is
connected to the mains.
This appliance is not intended for use by persons
(including children) with reduced physical, sensor y
or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and
knowledge, unless they ha ve been given super vision
or instr uction concerning use of the appliance by a
per son responsib le for their safety .
Children should be super vised to ensure that they
do not play with the appliance.
Do not let the mains cord come into contact with
the hot soleplate of the iron.
Caution
Only connect the appliance to an ear thed wall
socket.
Check the mains cord regular l y for possible damage.
The soleplate of the iron can become extremely hot
and may cause burns if touched.
When you ha ve nished ironing, when y ou clean the
appliance, when you ll or empty the water tank and
also when you lea ve the iron even for a shor t while:
set the steam control to position O , put the iron on
its heel and remov e the mains plug from the wall
socket.
Always place and use the iron on a stab le , level and
horizontal surface .
Do not put perfume, vinegar , starch, descaling agents,
ironing aids or other chemicals in the water tank.
This appliance is intended for household use only .
Electroma gnetic elds (EMF)
This Philips appliance complies with all standards
regarding electromagnetic elds (EMF). If handled
proper l y and according to the instr uctions in this user
manual, the appliance is safe to use based on scientic
evidence availab le today .
Before first use
1 Remove an y sticker or pr otective foil fr om the
soleplate.
2 Let the iron heat up to maximum temperatur e and
pass the iron o ver a piece of damp cloth for sev eral
minutes to remo ve any r esidues from the soleplate.

Preparing for use
Filling the water tank
Nev er immerse the iron in water .
1 Make sur e the appliance is unplugged.
2 Set the steam control to position O (= no
steam) (Fig. 2).
3 Tilt the iron backwar ds.
4 Fill the water tank with tap water up to the
maximum lev el. (Fig. 3)
Do not ll the water tank bey ond the MAX indication.
Do not put perfume, vinegar , star ch, descaling agents,
ironing aids or other chemicals in the water tank.
If the tap water in your ar ea is very hard, we advise
you to mix it with an equal amount of distilled
water or to use distilled water only .
Setting the temperature
1 Put the iron on its heel.
2 T o set the requir ed ironing temperatur e , turn the
temperature dial to the appr opriate position (Fig. 4).
Check the laundr y care label for the required ironing
temperature:
1 Synthetic fabrics (e .g. acr ylic , viscose , polyamide,
polyester)
1 Silk
2 W ool
3 Cotton, linen
If you do not kno w what kind or kinds of fabr ic an ar ticle
is made of, determine the right ironing temper ature b y
ironing a par t that is not visible when you w ear or use
the ar ticle .
Silk, w oollen and synthetic mater ials; iron the rever se side
of the fabric to prevent shiny patches. A void using the
spray function to prevent stains.
Star t ironing the ar ticles that require the lowest ironing
temperature , such as those made of synthetic bres.
3 Put the mains plug in an earthed wall socket.
4 Let the iron heat up until the temperatur e light rst
goes out and then goes on again (Fig. 5).
Note: The temper ature light g oes on from time to time
during ironing.
Using the appliance
Note: The ir on may give off some smok e when you use it for
the rst time . This stops after a shor t while.
Steam ironing
1 Make sur e that there is enough water in the water
tank.
2 Set the recommended ir oning temperature (see
chapter ‘Preparing for use’, section ‘Setting the
temperature’).
3 After the temperature light has gone out, set
the steam control to the a ppropriate steam
position. Make sur e that the steam setting you
select is suitable for the ir oning temperature
selected: (Fig. 6)
l for moderate steam (temper ature settings 2 to
3)
; for maximum steam (temperature settings 3 to
MAX)
The iron starts to pr oduce steam as soon as
it reaches the set temperatur e .
Ironing without steam
1 Set the steam control to position O (= no steam).
2 Set the recommended ir oning temperature (see
chapter ‘Preparing for use’, section ‘Setting the
temperature’).

Spra y function (specic types only)
Y ou can use the spray function to remove stub bor n
creases at any temperature .
1 Make sur e that there is enough water in the water
tank.

2 Press the spra y button sev eral times to moisten the
article to be ironed (Fig. 7).
Steam boost (specic types only)
A powerful shot of steam helps to remo ve stubborn
creases.
The steam boost function can only be used at
temperature settings between 3 and MAX.
1 Press and r elease the steam boost button (Fig. 8).
W ait a while before you use the button again to a void
spluttering.
Nev er direct the steam at people.
V ertical steam boost (specic types onl y)
Y ou can also use the steam boost function when you hold
the iron in ver tical position. This is useful f or removing
creases from hanging clothes, cur tains etc.
1 Hold the iron in v er tical position. Then press and
release the steam boost button (Fig. 9)
Nev er direct the steam at people.
Automatic shut-off (specic types only)
The automatic shut-off function automatically switches off
the heating element if the iron has not been mov ed for
a while.
The auto-off light starts ashing to indicate that the
iron has been s witched off by the safety shut-off
function (Fig. 10).
In horizontal position, this happens after 30 seconds.
In ver tical position, this happens after 8 min utes.
1 T o let the iron heat up again, pick it up or move it
slightly .
If the temperature light goes on, wait for it to go out
before you star t ironing.
If the temperature light does not go on, the iron is
ready for use.
Cleaning and maintenance
After ironing
1 Put the iron on its heel.
2 Remove the mains plug fr om the wall socket and let
the iron cool do wn.
3 Wipe scale and any other deposits off the soleplate
with a damp cloth and a non-abrasive (liquid)
cleaner .
T o k eep the soleplate smooth, a void har d contact with
metal objects. Never use a scouring pad, vinegar or
other chemicals to clean the soleplate.
4 Clean the upper part of the appliance with a damp
cloth.
5 Regularly rinse the water tank with water . Empty
the water tank after cleaning.
Double-Active Calc System (specic types
only)
The Double-Active Calc System consists of an Anti-Calc
tablet inside the water tank combined with the Calc-
Clean function.
The Anti-Calc tablet prev ents scale from clogging the
steam vents. The tab let is constantly active and does
not need replacement (Fig. 11).
The Calc-Clean function remov es the scale par ticles.
Calc-Clean function
Use the Calc-Clean function once ever y tw o weeks. If
the water in your area is v er y hard (i.e . when akes come
out of the soleplate during ironing), use the Calc-Clean
function more frequently .
1 Set the steam control to position O .
2 Set the temperature dial to MAX.
3 Fill the water tank to the maximum lev el.
Do not pour vinegar or other descaling agents into the
water tank.
4 Put the mains plug in an earthed wall socket.
5 Unplug the iron when the temperatur e light goes
out.
6 Hold the iron ov er the sink and set the steam
control to the Calc-Clean position x . (Fig. 12)
