Important
Read this user manual carefully before y ou use the appliance and sa ve it for
future reference.
Danger
- Never immerse the appliance in water or any other liquid, nor rinse it under
the tap.
W arning
- Check if the voltage indicated on the appliance corresponds to the local mains
voltage before y ou connect the appliance.
- Do not use the appliance if the plug, the mains cord or the appliance itself
is damaged.
- Do not touch the hot surfaces of the appliance when it operates.
- If the mains cord is damaged, y ou must ha ve it replaced b y Philips, a ser vice centre
authorised by Philips or similar ly qualied per sons in order to av oid a hazard.
- This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with
reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and
knowledge, unless they ha ve been giv en super vision or instr uction concerning
use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety .

Children should be super vised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance.
- Keep the mains cord out of the reach of children. Do not let the mains cord
hang ov er the edge of the table or worktop on which the appliance stands.
Caution
- Do not place the appliance on a hot surface and prevent the mains cord from
coming into contact with hot surfaces.
- Unplug the appliance if problems occur during brewing and before you clean it.
- W ait until the appliance has cooled down before y ou store it, especiall y if y ou
want to push the mains cord into the appliance. The jug tray and thermos jug
(HD7698 only) or the hotplate and the glass jug (HD7688 only) ma y be hot.
- Never use the jug in a microwa ve o ven.
- Do not mov e the appliance while it is brewing.
- Do not remov e the water tank with lter holder from the housing during a
brewing cycle, as there will be hot water in the lter holder .
- Thermos jug: Nev er immer se the jug in water or any other liquid, as this could
cause water to enter between the walls of the jug.
- Thermos jug: Do not dissemb le the jug.
- Thermos jug: When the jug is lled with coffee, keep it in upright position to
prevent leakage.

Glass jug: The jug is hot during and after brewing. Al ways hold the jug by its handle.
- This appliance is intended to be used in household and similar applications such as:
- staff kitchen areas in shops, ofces and other working environments;
- farm houses;
- by clients in hotels, motels and other residential type en vironments;
- bed and breakfast type environments.
- T o prevent damage to the appliance, do not use alkaline cleaning agents when
cleaning. Use a soft cloth and some washing-up liquid.
Compliance with standards
This machine complies with all standards regarding electromagnetic elds (EMF).
If handled proper ly and according to the instructions in this user manual,
the machine is safe to use based on scientic evidence a vailable toda y .
The energy consumption of this machine in off mode is less than 0.5 watts.
This means that this machine complies with European Directive 2009/125/EC,
which sets the ecological design requirements for energy-using products.
Before first use
Make sure you place the appliance on a at and stab le surface and put the mains
plug in an ear thed wall socket.
For hygiene reasons, ush the appliance b y lling the water tank with cold fresh
water and put the jug in place. Do not put a lter and ground coffee in the lter
holder . Let the appliance r un until the water tank is empty (see steps 1 to 9 on
the inside of the cov er).
Using the appliance
Bre wing coffee
Note: Mak e sure the jug is properly placed. The spout of the jug has to face the appliance.
If the jug is not properly placed, the dr ip stop function is automatically activated.
Caution: Do not r emove the water tank with lter holder fr om the housing during
a bre wing cycle, as there will be hot water in the lter holder .
, Glass jug: Y ou can lea ve the jug on the hotplate to k eep the coffee warm and
to
preserve its a vour . The appliance switches off automaticall y after 120 minutes.
, Thermos jug: The appliance s witches off automatically after bre wing. The jug
keeps the coff ee hot.
Note: T o k eep the coffee hot, r inse the jug with hot water befor e brewing.
, If you want to br ew another jug of coffee right a wa y , let the a ppliance cool
down for 3 minutes rst.
Drip stop function
The drip stop function enables you to remov e the jug from the coffeemaker bef ore
the brewing process is nished.
Note: If you r emo ve the jug for mor e than 20 seconds before all the w ater has passed
through the lter , the lter may overow .
Cleaning
Nev er immerse the appliance or thermos jug in water or any other liquid, nor
rinse it under the tap .
1 Clean the outside of the appliance with a moist cloth.
Note: Some of the parts of the appliance are dishw asher-proof. Check the c leaning table
to see which par ts can be c leaned in the dishwasher .
Descaling
Regular descaling prolongs the life of the appliance and guarantees optimal brewing
results and a constant brewing time for a long time.
Y ou should descale your appliance at least:
- Ever y two months if you use soft or ltered water (up to 18dH);
- Ever y month if you use hard water (ov er 18dH).
Y ou can contact your water board f or more information about your tap water .
If your appliance star ts producing more steam, this can be an indication of scale
building up in your appliance.
Y ou can use white vinegar with 4% acetic acid or a liquid descaler to descale
the coffeemaker .
Note: If you ar e not aw are of the w ater hardness in your area and ar e not in a position to
contact your local water boar d, we advise you to descale the appliance e very month.
Nev er use vinegar with an acetic acid content of 8% or more, natural vinegar , powder
descalers or tablet descalers to descale the appliance, as this ma y cause damage.
Descaling takes appro x. 30 to 60 min utes.
1 Fill the water tank with 0.8 litres of white vinegar (4% acetic acid).
Note: Y ou can also use an appropriate liquid descaler. In this case , f ollo w the instructions
on the package of the descaler .
2 T ake a pa per lter (type 1x4 or no. 4) and put it in the lter holder .
3 Press the on/off button to s witch on the appliance and let it complete the
bre wing cycle (see chapter ‘Using the appliance’).
4 Switch off the appliance.
5 Empty the jug ov er a sink and thro w awa y the pa per lter .
Note: F or extr a thor ough descaling and to mak e sure that there is no scale left in the
appliance, r epeat steps 1 to 5.
6 Let the appliance complete tw o more br ewing cycles with fr esh cold water to
remov e any vinegar/descaler and scale r esidues.
Note: Let the appliance cool do wn f or appr ox. 3 minutes before you star t the second run.
7 Clean the jug and the water tank with lter holder .
