5.1 Safety precautions for work
procedures comprising abrasive
cutting
Safety warnings for cutters
a) The protection cover supplied with the tool
must be securely attached to the electro-
mechanical tool and positioned for maxi-
mum safety purposes in such a way as to
leave only the smallest possible part of the
disc in the direction of the operator. The op-
erator as well as other persons standing in
the vicinity must position themselves so as
to keep the plane of the rotating disc free.
The protection cover helps to protect the opera-
tor against fragments of the disc material as well
against accidental contact with the disc.
b) This electromechanical tool is to be used
only with diamond cutting discs. The mere
fact that some accessories can be mounted to
the tool, does not guarantee its safe operation.
c) The nominal speed of the accessories must
be at least equal to the nominal speed that
is indicated on the electromechanical tool.
Accessories that are used with higher than their
nominal speeds may break or come apart.
d) Discs must be used for their recommended
use only. For example, it is not allowed to
perform grinding with the side-part of a
cutting disc. Abrasive cutting disc are intended
for circumferential grinding, and lateral forc-
es applied on these discs might result in their
break-up.
e) Only undamaged disc anges with correct
diameter for the selected disc must be
used. Correct anges support the disc and thus
they decrease the possibility of disc break-up.
f) Outer diameter and thickness of the discs
must be within the limits of the nominal
diameter for the accessories of the electro-
mechanical tool. Discs of incorrect size cannot
be suf ciently protected or operated.
g) Clamping dimensions of discs and anges
must be appropriate for mounting on the
tool spindle. Discs and anges with openings
not corresponding to the mounting dimensions
of the electromechanical tool will be unbalanced,
will produce excessive vibrations, and could
cause a loss of control over the tool.
h) Discs showing any signs of damage must
not be used. Before each use, the discs
must be checked for the presence of chips
or cracks. If the tool or disc falls down, it
will be necessary to check these for dam-
age, or mount an undamaged disc. After
checking and mounting a disc, the operator
as well as other persons standing in the
vicinity must position themselves so as to
keep the plane of the rotating disc free, and
the tool shall be kept idling with maximum
speed for one minute. Damaged discs usually
break-up during a test period of this duration.
i) Personal work protection equipment must
be used. Based on the application, a face
shield, integral protective goggles, or
safety goggles must be used. Further, a
dust protection mask, hearing protection,
gloves, and work apron able to stop small
fragments of abrasives or work-piece must
be used as appropriate. The eye protection
used must be able to stop ying fragments that
occur during different work procedures. The
dust protection mask or the respirator must be
able to provide ltering of such particles that
are produced during the given procedure. Being
subjected to noise of high intensity for long-
term periods may result in loss of hearing.
j) All persons standing nearby must stay at
safe distance from the work area. Every-
one who enters the work area, must use
personal work protection equipment. Frag-
ments of the work-piece or of a damaged disc
may get ying away, and cause an injury even
outside of the direct work area.
k) When carrying out tasks where the cutting
tool might touch a hidden electricity line or
its own power cord, the tool must be held
by its insulated gripping surfaces. Contact
of the cutting tool with a “live” conductor can
cause the uninsulated metal parts of the elec-
tromechanical tool to become “live” which can
result in electric shock to the user.
l) The power cord must be placed out of reach
of rotating accessories. If the operator looses
control over the tool, the power cord might get
cut or grind through, and the hand or arm of
the operator might get pulled into the rotating
tool.
m) The electromechanical tool must be never
put aside before the accessories come to
a complete stop. The rotating disc might get
into contact with the surface, and drive the tool
out of operator’s control.
n) The electromechanical tool must never be
switched on while being carried at the waist
of the operator. An accidental contact with
rotating accessories might cause the clothes of
the operator to get caught by the accessories
which would then be pulled towards the body.
o) Air openings of the tool must be cleaned
regularly. The motor blower draws in dust in-
side the casing, and excessive accumulation of
metal dust could cause electric hazard.
p) The electromechanical tool must not be
operated in the vicinity of ammable ma-
terials. These materials could ignite from ying
sparks.
q) Accessories that require water cooling
must not be used. Using water or other uid
coolants could cause injury or death as the re-
sult of electric shock.
