Bell AB 212 / UH-1N Bell AB 212 / UH-1N
Der UH-1N ist die Militärversion des Bell 212 Helicopters und ist als leichter
Allwetter-Einsatz- und Transporthubschrauber, zur Bodenunterstützung, als
Luftambulanz und zur Suche und Bergung von vermissten Personen bei Tag und
Nacht seit 40 Jahren weltweit im Einsatz. Der Hauptunterschied zum einmotori-
gen Huey besteht in der geänderten Motorverkleidung und dem stromungs-
günstigeren Bug. Nach dem Erstflug im April 1969 erwarb Kanada als erster
Kunde 50 CH-135 und das US-Militär von 1970 bis 1978 insgesamt 294 UH-1N.
Für die Firma Bell Helicopter Co. wurde der Bell 212 über viele Jahre als
Zivilhubschrauber ein großer Erfolg. In Italien baut die Firma Agusta die Maschine
als AB 212 und AB 212ASW zur Schiffs- und U-Bootbekämpfung in Lizenz. Die
Volksrepublik China erwarb ebenfalls eine Produktionslizenz. Die Maschine kann
neben dem Piloten bis zu 14 Passagiere mitnehmen. Der Transportraum ist 6,23
qm groß. Im Sanitätsdienst können 6 Kranke oder Verwundete auf Tragen unter-
gebracht werden. Die maximale externe Zuladung liegt bei 2,3 Tonnen. Mit einer
Treibstoffkapazität von 814 Liter kommt der Hubschrauber bis zu 460 km weit.
Die UH-1N der US Air Force erhielten später zusätzlich zwei 170-Liter-Tanks, um
die Reichweite auf 660 km zu steigern. Bei einer Dauernotleistung von 765 WPS
kann der Hubschrauber im Notfall mit einem Triebwerk weiterfliegen. Die
Maschinen lassen sich mit einer passiven Verteidigung gegen Raketen, zwei
„door gunner“ und zwei Raketenabschußcontainern bewaffnen. Außerdem ist
der Einsatz einer in Flugrichtung fest installierten Minigun, bedient vom Piloten,
möglich. Im Truppentransport können 6 bis 8 vollausgerüstete Soldaten abge-
setzt werden. Derzeit sollen bei den US-Streitkräften noch rund 60 Twin Huey
im Einsatz sein. Das Deutsche Bundesministerium des Innern setzte bis 2007 zwei
orangerot lackierte Bell 212 als Rettungshubschrauber in Norddeutschland ein.
Die Rettungsmannschaft bestand neben dem Piloten aus dem Bordtechniker,
einem Notarzt und dem Rettungsassistenten. D-HBZS und D-HBZT waren für
den Einsatz über dem Meer zusätzlich mit einer Seilwinde zur Personenbergung
und einem Windenwart ausgerüstet. Beide Maschinen sind von EC 135 abgelöst
worden.

The UH-1N is the military version of the Bell 212. As a light all-weather helicop-
ter it fulfils the role’s of a transport helicopter, ground support, air-ambulance
and Search and Rescue (SAR) of missing persons by day and night. It has been in
service for 40 years world-wide. The main difference between this model and
the single engine Huey is the redesigned engine cowling’s and the more aero-
dynamically formed nose. After the maiden flight in April 1969, Canada as first
customer acquired fifty CH-135’s and between 1970 and 1978 the US Military
took delivery of a total 294 UH-1N. As a civil helicopter, the Bell 212 was for many
years a great success for the Bell Helicopter Company. In Italy, the Italian compa-
ny Agusta built the UH-1N under license. It was designated AB212 and
AB212ASW and adapted for use in the maritime anti-ship and anti-submarine
role’s. The Peoples Republic of China similarly acquired a production license and
this version can carry 14 people in addition to the pilot. The utility area has a
capacity of 6.23 qm (67 sq. ft.). In the air-ambulance role 6 sick or wounded can
be accommodated on stretchers. The maximum external payload is around 2.3
tons. The helicopter has a range of up to 460 km (285 miles) with its fuel capac-
ity of 814 litres ( 180 gals). The US Air Force UH-1N later received two extra 170
litre (37.4 gal) fuel tanks in order to increase the range to 660 km (410 miles). With
its Emergency Power Rating of 765 SHP, the UH-1N can continue flight on only
one engine in an emergency. The helicopter can be armed with a passive anti-
missile system, two „door gunners“ and two missile dispenser pods. The installa-
tion of a fixed mount forward firing mini-gun controlled by the pilot is also pos-
sible. In the Troop Transport Role 6 to 8 fully armed soldiers can be dispatched.
The US Forces are supposed have around 60 Twin Huey’ in currently in service.
Up until 2007, the German Ministry of the Interior deployed two orange painted
Bell 212’s as Rescue Helicopters in Northern Germany. The rescue crew was com-
posed of an flight technician, an emergency doctor and a para-medic as well as
the pilot. For maritime rescue, D-HBZS and D-HBZT were additionally fitted with
a winch for hoisting people and a winch operator. Both helicopters were
replaced with the EC135.
