Der erste Prototyp des Cromwell, mit dem neuen von Rolls
Royce aus dem Merlin-Flugzeugtriebwerk entwickelten
Meteor-Motor, stand Anfang 1942 zur Erprobung bereit.
Kapazitätsengpässe bei der Herstellung des neuen Motors
führte jedoch dazu, dass als Übergangslösung der altbekannte
Nuffield Liberty-Motor (ca. 400 PS Leistung) bei den Fahr -
zeugen der im Herbst 1942 anlaufenden Serienproduktion
zum Einbau kam. Diese Fahrzeuge wurden als A27L Centaur
bezeichnet und Leyland erhielt den Auftrag zur Fertigung von
4.256 Fahrzeugen. Der Centaur Mk. I war mit einer 6 Pdr.
Kanone ausgestattet, während der Mk. III mit einer 75 mm
Kanone und der Mk. IV mit einer 95 mm Haubitze ausgerüstet
war. Ab Januar 1943 lief dann die Serienproduktion des Crom -
well Mk. I mit 6 Pdr. Kanone an, sehr bald gefolgt vom mit
einer 75 mm QF Mk. V Kanone versehenen Cromwell Mk. V. Ab
Mitte 1943 standen genügend Meteor-Motoren zur Verfü -
gung, so daß die älteren Centaur Mk. III entsprechend umgerü-
stet werden konnten. Diese Fahrzeuge wurden als A27M
Cromwell Mk. IV bezeichnet und liefen ab Oktober 1943 der
Truppe zu.

engine, was ready for testing at the beginning of 1942.
However production bottle-necks with the new engine meant
that as a transitional solution the vehicles that went into pro-
duction in autumn 1942 had the familiar Nuffield Liberty
engine (capacity approx. 400 hp). These vehicles were desig-
nated the A27L Centaur and Leyland received the order for
4.256. The Centaur Mk 1 was equipped with a 6-pounder can-
non, whereas the Mk II had a 75 mm cannon and the Mk IV a
95 mm howitzer. From January 1943 the Cromwell went into
production with the 6-pounder, to be followed very soon by
the Cromwell Mk V equipped with a 75 mm QF Mk V cannon.
From mid 1943 there were enough Meteor engines available
to re-equip the older Centaur Mk III. These vehicles were des-
ignated the A27M Cromwell Mk IV and were delivered to the
troops in October 1943.
