Der Duo Discus ist eines der populärsten doppelsitzigen
Segelflugzeuge. Im Jahre 1993 eingeführt, wurde er
kontinuierlich weiterentwickelt und glänzt durch das
große Einsatzspektrum. Die gutmütigen Flugeigenschaften
machen den Doppelsitzer auch unter schwierigen
Bedingungen zu einem echten „Wohlfühlflugzeug“. Das
zweisitzige Hochleistungssegelflugzeug der Firma
Schempp-Hirth Flugzeugbau GmbH hat eine Spannweite
von 20 Metern und eine Flügelfläche von 16,4 m

. Das
Leergewicht beträgt 430 Kilogramm, das Höchstgewicht
beläuft sich auf 730 kg. Der Duo Discus hat ein einzieh bares
Fahrwerk und kann 200 Liter Wasser als Ballast mitführen.
Er hat eine Utility-Zulassung und ist inzwischen auch für
den einfachen Kunstflug zugelassen. Seine Stärken sind
Handlichkeit und agile Wendigkeit, ausgewogene Flug -
eigenschaften, ein großes Einsatzspektrum von Vereins -
schulung bis Hochleistungsflug sowie leichte Handhabung
am Boden. Die Verwendung von Kohlefaser in allen
Baukomponenten der Flügel und im Rumpf trägt entschei-
dend zu einer Gewichtsreduzierung bei. Der Duo Discus ist
ein außergewöhnlich ausgereifter und alltagstauglicher
Doppelsitzer, der neue Maßstäbe in dieser Klasse setzt.
Über 600 Exemplare wurden bisher gebaut.
The Duo Discus is one of the most popular twin-seat
gliders. Introduced in 1993 it has been continuously
developed and excels though its wide-ranging usefulness.
The aircraft’s stable flight characteristics give the crew of
the two-seater a „comfortable feeling“ even in difficult
conditions. The two-seater high performance glider from
the firm of Schempp-Hirth Aircraft Construction PLC has a
wingspan of 20 meters (65ft 7ins) and a wing area of
16.4 m

). It weighs in at 430kg (950lbs) empty and
has a maximum all-up weight of 730kg (1610lbs). The Duo
Discus has a retractable undercarriage and can carry 200
Litre (44 gals) of water ballast. It has a utility certification
and is has now been certified for simple aerobatics. Its
strengths are its agility and manoeuvrability, smooth hand-
ling characteristics, an enormous spectrum of use from club
trainer to high performance flight as well as easy ground
handling. Its reduced weight is attributable to the use of
carbon-fibre in all wing and fuselage components. The Duo
Discus is an extraordinarily well engineered two seater for
daily use that sets new standards in its class. Over 600
aircraft have been built to date.
