Thank you very much for purchasing a Si gma Lens. In order to get the maximum
performance and enjoy ment out of your Sigma len s, please read thi s instruction
booklet thoroughly before you sta rt to use the lens.
DESCRIPTION OF THE P ARTS (fig.1)
DC LENS
These are special lenses that are designated for digi tal cameras because the lens image
circle is designated to correspond t o the size of the image sensors of most digital SLR
cameras. The specialized design gives these lens es the ideal properties for digital cameras.
◆ An image sensor element larger than those correspo nding to APS-C cannot be used in
digital cameras or 35mm SLR cameras. If such an element i s used vignetting will occur
on the picture surface.
◆ If you use SD14 or SD10 or SD9 digital camera, c orresponding angle of view will be
30-340mm.
A TT ACHI NG TO CA MERA BODY
When this lens is attached to the camera body it will automaticall y function in the same way
as your normal lens. Please refer to the instruction bo oklet for your camera body .
◆ On the lens mount surface, there are a number of couplers and el ectrical contacts.
Please keep them clean to ensure prope r connection. T o avoid damag ing the lens, be
especially sure to place the lens with its front end down while changing the lens.
SETTING THE EXPOSURE MODE
The sigma lens functions automaticall y after mounting to your camera. Please, refer to the
camera instruction book.
FOCUSING AND ZOOMIN G
For autofocus operation, set the fo cus mode switch on the len s to “AF” position.
If you wish to focus manually , set the foc us mode switch on t he lens to the “MF” position.
Y ou can adjust the focus by turning the focus ring.
◆ T o avoid damagin g AF mechanism, plea se do not turn the fo cus ring manually while in
the autofocus mode.
◆ The viewfinder of so me Nikon AF cameras ha ve indicators to displ ay the focus status.
The “● ” symbol indicates that correct fo cus has been set, “
► ” indicates that focus is
set in front of the sub ject, and “
◄” indi cates that focus is set behind the subject. W hen
this AF lens is used with Nikon AF came ras in MF mode, ple ase adjust the lens’ focus
until the “● ” symbol is visible.
◆ When operating this l ens in manual focus mode, it is recommended that correct fo cus be
confirmed visually in the viewfi nder rather than relying on the distance scale. This is
due to possible focus shift resulting from extreme c hanges in temperature which cause
various components in the lens to expand and contact. Special allowance is made for
this at the infinity setting.
《Zooming 》
Rotate the Rubber grip on the zoom ring t o the desired position.
《Zoom Lock Switch 》
This lens is also equipped with Zo om Lock Switch to eliminate the zoom creep when the
lens is tilted down. Please set zooming ring to 18mm and set the zoom lock switch to the
“LOCK ” position. (fig.2)
MAGNIF ICA TION
The indication of the lens as “1:xx” on a fo cusing distance scale represent the magnification
(commonly called the reproduction ratio). For example when you are in focus at the
“1:3.9” position on the scale, a subjec t with an actual size of 3.9cm will have an image size
of 1cm on the firm. (fig.3)
ABOUT OS (OPTICAL ST ABILIZER) FEA TURES
This OS lens effectively compensates for image blu rring caused by camera shak e. Using
the Optical Stabilizer function it is possible to get sharp results at shutter speeds
approximately 3-4 stops slower than you could without using the OS function.
Set the OS switch to ON (fig.4). Press th e shutter button halfway down, confirm t he image
in the viewfinder is stable t hen take the picture. (It takes approximatel y 1 second to produc e
a stable image from the time of depressin g the shutter button half way).
◆ Do not use the Optical Stabilizer in the following situations:
▪ When the lens is mounted on a tripod. ▪ W hen using the camera in Bulb mode.
◆ The Optical St abilizer function is powered from the c amera. If the OS lens is attached to
your camera and activated, shooti ng capacity of your camera will be lower tha n with
conventional lenses used with the same camera. If you are not using OS, please turn
OFF the OS switch, in order to pre vent unnecessary batter y consumption.
◆ Be sure to turn the OS s witch to the OFF position b efore attaching or detaching the lens
to the camera.
◆
The OS continu es to operate afte r you release yo ur finger from t he shutter butt on, as long
as the exposu re meter displa ys the expos ure value. Neve r remove the len s or remove the
camera’s battery while th e image stab ilizer is opera ting as this cou ld damage the le ns.
◆
Although the viewfi nder ima ge may a ppear t o shake im mediately after sho oting and/ or at th e start
of the flash charge cycle of the ca mera’s built-in flash, it will not cause any effect to the pictur es.
◆
If the lens is detached from camera or the cam era power is turn ed off while the OS
function is in ope ration, the lens m ay emit a chatterin g noise, but t his is not a malfunction.
LENS HOOD
A bayonet type detachable hood is provided with t he lens. T his lens hood hel ps to prevent
flare and ghosted images caused by bright illumi nation from outside the picture area.
Attach the hood and turn clockwise until it stop s rotation. (fig.5)
◆
When taking photo graphs using the b uilt-in flash, it is advisable to remove the le ns hood so
as to avoid cutting o ff any of the flash outpu t, which could cau se a shadow in the picture.
◆ In order to place the lens and hood into the storag e case, you must first remove the
hood, then replace it on the l ens in the reverse position. (f ig.6)
FIL TER
◆ Only one filter should be used at the time. T wo or more filters an d/or special thicker
filters, like a polarizing filter, may cause vignetting.
◆ When using a polarizing filter with AF camera, use the “circular” type.
BASIC CARE AND ST OR AGE
◆ Avoid any shocks or exposure to extreme high or l ow temperatures or to humidit y .
◆ For extended storage, choose a cool an d dry place, preferably with good ventilation. T o
avoid damage to the lens coa ting, keep away from mothballs o r naphthalene gas.
◆ Do not use thinner, benzine or other organic cleaning agen ts to remove dirt or finger
prints from the lens elements. Clean by using a so ft, moistened lens cloth or lens tissue.
◆ This lens is not waterproof. W hen you use the lens in the rain or near water, keep it
from getting wet. It is often impract ical to repair the internal mechanism, lens elements
and electric components damaged by water .
◆ Sudden temperature chang es may cause condensatio n or fog to appear on t he surface
of the lens. When entering a warm room from the cold ou tdoors, it is advisable to keep
the lens in the case until the tempe rature of the lens approach es room temperature.
