Using the timers
e system o ers two timer functions. I f you use both
timers, the Sleep Timer has p riority .
Sleep T imer:
Y o u can fall asleep to music. i s function works even if
the clock is not set.

“ A UTO , ” the system au toma tically turns o a er the
current disc or ta pe stops o r in 100 minut es.
If the tape deck is still pla ying or r ecording a t the set
time, the system turns o aer the ta pe deck stops.

T roubleshooting
1 Make sure the power cor d and speaker cords are
correctly and rmly connected.
2 Find y our problem in the checklist below , and take
the indicated corrective action.
If the issue persis ts, contact yo ur nearest Son y dealer .
If the ST ANDBY indicator ashes
Immedia tely un plug the pow er cord , and check the
followin g item.
If y our system has a v oltage selector , is the voltage
selector set to the correct vol tage?

system. If the is sue persists, con tact your near est Sony

General
The sy stem does not turn on.
Is the po wer cor d plugged in?
Is the vo ltage selector set corr ectly to matc h the
local power line voltag e? Saudi Ara bian models also
may no t turn on when the vol tage selector is set to
NO OPERA TION.
There is no sound .
Are the + an d – speaker cords sh ort-circuited?
Are y ou using o nly the supp lied speakers?
Is a nything b locking the ven tilation holes o n the back
of the system?
Sound comes from one channel, or the left and
right volumes ar e unbalanced.
Place the speakers as symmetrically as possible.
Connect only the sup plied speakers.
Severe hum or noise .
M ove the syst em awa y from sour ces of noi se.
Connect the system to a dier ent wall socket.
Install a noi se lter (ava ilable separate ly) to the power co rd.
The remote does not function.

T ape deck (Ex cept for North American

The sound exhibits e x cessive w ow or utter or
dropout.
Clean the capstans a nd pinch r ollers. Also , clean and
demagnetize the tape heads. See “Preca utions ” for details.
T o change the AM tuning int erval
e AM tuning in terval is factor y-pr eset to 9 kHz or
10 kHz (fo r some areas: this function is no t ava ilable on
the Eur opean, Rus sian and Sa udi Arabia n models).

when touched
Notes on discs
Before pla ying, wipe the disc with a cleaning c loth from
the center o ut to the edge.
Do not clean discs with solv ents, suc h as benzine
thinner , o r commer cially availab le cleaners or a nti-
static spra y in tended for vin yl LP s.
Do not expose discs to direct sunlight or hea t sources
such as hot a ir ducts, nor lea ve it in a ca r parked in
direct sunlight.
On safety
e unit is no t disconnected from the A C pow er source
(mains) as lo ng as it is co nnected to the wall outlet,
even if the unit itself has been turned o.
Complet ely disconnect the power co rd (ma ins lead)
from the wall socket (mains) if i t is not go ing to be used
for an ext ended period of time. When unp lugging the
unit, alwa ys grip the plug. N ever pull the cor d itself.
Should a ny solid ob ject or liquid get in to the system,
unpl ug the system, and ha ve i t checked b y qualied
personnel befor e operating i t again.
e A C power co rd can be chan ged only b y a qualied
ser vice facility .
On placement
Do not place the system in a n inclined position o r in
locations tha t are extr emely ho t, cold, dus ty , dir ty , or
humid o r lacking adequat e ventila tion, or sub ject to
vibra tion, direct sunlight o r a bright light.
Be careful when placing the unit or s peakers on
surfaces that ha ve been specially treated (for exa mple ,
with wax, oil, polish) as sta ining or discolo ration o f the
surface may r esult.
If the syst em is bro ught dir ectly from a cold to a warm
location or is p laced in a very damp room, mo isture
may co ndense on the lens inside the CD p layer , and
cause the system to malfunction. I n this situa tion,
remo ve the disc, and leav e the system turned on f or
about a n hour un til the moistur e evapora tes.
On heat buildup
H eat buildu p on the uni t during opera tion is normal
and is no t cause for ala rm.
Do not to uch the cabinet if i t has been used
con tinuousl y at a high vo lume because the cabin et may
have becom e hot.
Do not obstruct the ventila tion holes.
On the speaker syst em
is speaker system is not ma gnetically shielded, and
the picture o n nearby TV sets may become magnetically
distorted. I n this situa tion, turn o the TV , wai t 15 to 30
minu tes, and turn i t back on.
If there is n o imp rov ement, m ove the speakers far a wa y
from the TV .
Cleaning the cabinet
Clean this system with a so cloth sligh tly mois tened
with a mild detergen t solutio n. Do not use an y type
of ab rasive pad, scouring pow der , or solvent, such as
thinner , benzine, o r alcohol.

Cleaning the tape heads
U se dry- or wet-type cleaning cassette (a vailable
separatel y) aer every 10 hours of use, befo re yo u start an
importan t recor ding, or a er playing a n old tape. F ailur e
to clean the tape heads can ca use degraded sound quality
or an ina bility of the uni t to reco rd or pla y tapes. F or
details, refer to the in structions of the cleaning cas sette.
Demagnetizing the tape heads
U se a demagnetizing cassett e (availab le separatel y) aer
every 20 to 30 hours of use. F ailure t o demagnetize
the tape heads can cause an in crease in noise, a loss o f
high frequency sound, and an ina bility to co mplet ely
erase tapes. For deta ils, refer to the in structions of the
demagnetizing cassette.
