area
Recover y our computer from Reco very Media if
you hav e used software to modify the recov ery
area, installed a differ ent operating syst em from
the preinstalled one, or f ormatted the built-in
hard disk drive or SSD without using
V AIO Care Rescue.
I cannot create Rec ov ery Media
T ry the suggestions below:

Disconnect all unnecessary ex t ernal devices
from your comput er .
T ry the suggestions below:
Check the condition of Recovery Media. If
you are using optical discs , check the discs
for dirt or damage. If the discs are not
clean, clean them and try recovering your
computer again.
If you cannot recov er your computer fr om
the recov ery area, restart the computer
and recov er the computer from the
recov ery area again, or use Recovery
Media.
If you cannot recov er your computer using
a USB optical drive or USB flash drive,
connect the drive to another USB port on
the computer , then turn off the computer
and try recovering it again.
If the problem persists, visit the V AIO online
support web site for further assistance.
My computer does not start
When using your computer f or the first time,
make sure the computer is plugged int o an
AC pow er source . At the time of delivery , the
power button or the po wer switch is disabled
until the computer is plugged into an A C
power sourc e.
Make sure your computer is secur ely plugged
into a power sour ce and turned on and the
power indicator ligh t is lit.
Make sure the battery pack is installed
properly and charged.
Disconnect all connected USB devices (if any),
and then restart your computer .
Remove all extra memory modules you may
have installed since pur chase, and then restart
your computer .
If your computer is plugged into a po wer strip
or an uninterruptible power supply (UPS),
make sure the power strip or UPS is plugged
into a power sour ce and turned on.
Unplug the power cor d or the AC adapter , and
remove the ba ttery pack . W ait three to fiv e
minutes. Reinstall the battery pack, plug the
power cor d or the AC adapter , and then turn
on your computer .
Condensation may cause y our computer to
malfunction. If this occurs, do not use the
computer for a t least one hour .
Check that you are using the supplied Son y
power cor d or AC adapter .
If you are using an external display , make sure
it is plugged into a power sour ce and turned
on.

Enter Onetime P assw ord
If you enter a wrong pow er-on password three
times consecutively , the
Enter Onetime Passw ord message appears and
Window s will not start. Press and hold the power
button or slide and hold the power swit ch for
more than four sec onds to check that the power
indicator light turns off . W ait for 10 to 15 seconds ,
then restart your computer and enter the corr ect
password .
The password is case sensitiv e, so be sur e to
check letters for the curren t case before y ou
enter the passwor d.
I cannot remember the pow er-on
passwor d
If you have f orgotten the pow er-on password,
contact an authorized Sony service/suppor t
center .
A reset fee will be char ged.
The gr een pow er indicator light
turns on but my scr een remains
blank
Press the A lt+F4 keys several times t o close
the application window . An application error
may have oc curred.
Press the Ctr l+Alt+Delete keys and click the
arrow next to the Shut down button
and Restart .
Press and hold the po wer button or slide and
hold the power switch f or more than f our
seconds to shut down y our computer .
Unplug the power cor d or the AC adapter , and
leave the comput er for about five minut es.
Then plug the power c ord or the AC adapt er ,
and turn on the computer again.
T urning off your comput er with the
Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys , the power switch, or
the power button ma y cause loss of unsaved
data.
The char ge indicator light is
blinking fast and my c omputer
does not star t
This problem could be due to the battery pack
not being installed properly . T o solve this
problem, turn off your comput er and remove
the battery pack . Then r einstall the battery
pack to the computer . For details , see the on-
screen User Guide .
If the problem persists, it means the installed
battery pack is not compatible.
Remove the battery pack and contact an
authorized Sony service/suppor t c enter . T o
find the nearest center or agen t, see the on-
screen User Guide .

data with V AIO Care Rescue.
T o restore files which ha ve been backed up by
V AIO Care Rescue, use V AIO Data Restore T ool.
If your computer is equipped with the USB port
that is compliant with the USB 2.0 standard when
you use a USB device to back up y our data,
connect the USB device to the port.
Restoring your data
using a rest ore poin t
A restore poin t enables you to rest ore your
computer system files t o the previous state when
the restore poin t was created . T ypically, a r estore
point is created aut omatically , for e xample when
you install a software driver . However , we
recommend that y ou create the r estore point
manually on the Contr ol Panel windo w before
installing any software or software drivers on
your computer .

Repair W indow s 7 and press the Enter key .

Select a keyboard layout and click Next .
If the appropriate keyboard lay out is not
selected, you may not be able to en ter the
password corr ectly .

Select your operating system and click Next .
Back up your files with Rescue Data if y ou
have changed the files after you backed up
them using the Windo ws backup featur e.

Click Sy stem Restore.
The Sy stem Restore windo w appears.

In the Recovery window , click
Open Syst em Restore.

option is displayed in the S ystem Rest ore
window , select it and click Next .
If not, click Next .

How can I crea te a hard disk
par tition?

Click Start , Control P anel,
Sy stem and Security, and
Create and f ormat hard disk partitions
under Administra tive T ools.
If the User Ac count C ontrol window appears ,
click Y es.
If you are currently logged ont o your
computer as a standard user , you may be
prompted to en ter an administrator name and
password .

Right-click the C: drive and select
Shrink V olume.

Enter the size of the partition to be created in
Enter the amount of spac e to shrink in MB
and click Shrink .

Right-click Unallocated and select
New Simple V olume.
