SPECIFIC SAFET Y INSTRUC TIONS FOR BA TTER Y CHARGERS
WARNING: BURST HAZARD: D o not use the unit for char ging dr y- cell batt eries that are commonly used with home appliances .
These batteries may burst and c ause injur y to persons and damage property . Use the unit for charging/boosting a 12 volt battery
only . It is not intended to supply po wer to a low-voltage electrical system other than in a starter-motor application.
• Useof accessories and attachments: The use of any accessory or attachment not rec ommended by manufac turer f or use with
this battery charger could be hazar dous.
• Stayaler t.Use common sense . Do not operate battery charger when you ar e tired.
• Do not operatethe battery charger near flammable liquids or in gaseous or explosiv e atmospheres. Motors may spark, and the
sparks might ignite fumes .
WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK:
• Never immerse the batter y charger in wa ter or any other liquid, or use when wet .
WARNING: RISK OF EXPL OSIVE GASES:
• W orking in the vicinity of a lead acid battery is dangerous. Batteries generate explosive gases during normal battery operation.
For this r eason, it is of the utmost impor tance that each time befor e using the battery charger you read this manual and follo w
instructions exactly .
• T o reduce the risk of batter y explosion, follow these instruc tions and those published by the battery manufac turer and
manufacturer of any equipment y ou intend to use in the vicinity of the battery . Review cautionar y markings on these products
and on the engine.
• This equipment employs par ts (switches , relays , etc.) that produce arcs or sparks. Ther efore, if used in a garage or enclosed area,
the unit MUST be placed not less than 18 inches abov e the floor .
• THIS UNIT IS NOT FOR USE BY CHILDREN AND SHOULD ONL Y BE OPERA TED BY ADUL TS.
WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE:
• Do not operate near flammable materials, fumes or gases.
• Do not expose to ex treme heat or flames.
• If the vehicle accessory outlet fuse opens (blows) when plugging in this battery charger , do not use this battery charger with this
vehicle accessory outlet:
Do not repea tedly replace the fuse.
Do not replac e the vehicle accessory outlet fuse with one of a higher amperage rating.
Nev er attempt to pat ch the fuse with tin foil or wire.
An y of these ac tions may cause serious electric al damage and/or a fire.
CAUTION: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY OR PROPERT Y DAMAGE:
• NEVER A T TEMPT T O CHARGE A FROZEN BA TTERY .
• Do not charge the battery while the engine is operating .
• Stay clear of fan blades, belts, pulleys, and other par ts that can cause injur y to persons.
• V ehicles that have on-board computeriz ed systems may be damaged if vehicle battery is jump -star ted . Before jump-star ting , read
the vehicle ’ s owner’ s manual to confirm that external-starting assistance is suitable.
• When working with lead acid batteries , always make sure immediate assistance is available in c ase of accident or emergency.
• Alwa ys have protective eyewear when using this product: contac t with battery acid may cause blindness and/or sever e burns. B e
awar e of first aid procedures in case of acciden tal contact with batter y acid.
• Hav e plenty of fresh water and soap nearby in case battery acid contacts skin.
• If batter y acid contacts skin or clothing, wash immediately with soap and wat er for at least 10 minutes and get medical atten tion
immediately .
• Never smoke or allow a spark or flame in vicinit y of vehicle battery , engine or batter y charger .
• Remov e personal metal items such as rings, bracelets, necklaces and watches when working with a lead acid battery . A lead acid
battery can produce a short circuit current high enough to w eld a ring, or similar metal object, to skin causing a sev ere burn.
• Never allow batter y acid to come in contact with this unit.
• Do not operate this unit in a closed area or restrict ventilation in any way .
• Check for damagedpar ts. Any part that is damaged should be properly r epaired or replaced by manufacturer unless otherwise
indicated elsewher e in this instruc tion manual before further use.
•Read and understand this instruction manual before usingthis unit.
• FIRST AID – SKIN: If batt er y acid comes in contact with skin, rinse immediately with wa ter , then wash thoroughly with soap and
wat er . If redness, pain, or irritation oc curs, seek immediate medical atten tion.
EYES: If battery acid comes in contact with eyes, flush ey es immediately , for a minimum of 15 minutes and seek immediat e
medical attention.
LCD LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY : If liquid cr ystal comes in contact with your skin: W ash area off completely with plen t y of wat er .
Remove c ontaminated clothing. If liquid crystal gets into y our eye: Flush the affected eye with clean wa ter and then seek medical
attention. If liquid crystal is swallow ed: Flush your mouth thoroughly with w ater . Drink large quantities of w ater and induce
vomiting . T hen seek medical attention.
SPECIFIC SAFET Y INSTRUC TIONS FOR POWER CORDS
• Don’tabuse cord.Never carry appliance by cor d or yank it to disconnect from receptacle . Keep cord fr om heat, oil, and sharp
edges. Pull b y plug rather than cord when unplugging the unit .
• Ground F ault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) prot ec tion should be pro vided on the circuits or outlets to be used. Receptacles ar e
available ha ving built in GFCI protection and may be used for this measure of safety .
Extension cords
WARNING: An extension cor d should not be used unless absolutely necessar y . Use of improper extension cord could result in a
risk of fire and elec tric shock. If an extension cord is used, make sure that the pins of the extension cord are the same number , size
and shape as those in the charger .
Make sure your extension cord is in good condition. When using an extension cor d, be sure to use one heavy enough to carr y the
current y our product will draw . An undersized cor d will cause a drop in line voltage resulting in loss of po wer and overhea ting. The
following table shows the correct size to use depending on cord length and nameplate ampere rating . If in doubt, use the next
heavier gage. The smaller the gage number , the heavier the cord .

The BC1509 has a polarized plug ( one blade is wider than the other) as a safety feature. This plug will fit in to a polarized outlet only
one way . If the plug does not fit fully into the outlet, rev erse the plug. If it still does not fit, c ontac t a qualified electrician. Do not
attempt t o defeat this safety feature.
The BC2509 and BC4009 batt er y chargers are for use on a nominal 120-v olt circuit, and hav e a grounding plug that looks lik e the
plug illustrated in the sk etch A in the illustration below . A temporar y adapter , which looks like the adapter illustrat ed in sketches
B and C, may be used to connect this plug to a two-pole rec eptacle as shown in sketch B if a properly gr ounded outlet is not
available . T he temporar y adapter should be used only until a pr operly grounded outlet can be installed by a qualified electrician.
DANGER: Before using adapt er as illustrated, be c er tain that center scr ew of outlet plate is grounded . T he green-colored rigid
ear or lug extending from adapter must be connec ted to a properly grounded outlet– make cer tain it is grounded. If necessary,
replace original outlet c over plate scr ew with a longer screw that will secure adapt er ear or lug to outlet cover plat e and make
ground connection to gr ounded outlet.
