Pr eamble
The GNU Gener al Public License is a free, co pyleft lice nse for softwar e an d other
ki nd s of wo rk s.
The licen ses for mos t softwar e a nd other practical works ar e desi gned to take
aw ay you r freedom to s hare an d c hange the wor ks. By c ontras t, th e GNU G eneral
Publ ic Licens e is intend ed to guarant ee you r freedom to sha re and chan ge all ver-
sio ns of a prog ram--to ma ke sure it remai ns free software for al l its users . We, the
Free S oftwar e Fou ndation, us e th e GNU Ge neral P ublic Lic ense for most o f our
softwa re; it a pplies also to any other work released th is w ay by its autho rs. You
can a pply i t to your progr ams, too .
When we spea k of free software, we are refer ring to freedom, not price . Our Gen-
era l Public Licens es are design ed to mak e sur e that you hav e the freedom to di s-
t ribute copi es of free softwar e (and c harge for them i f you wish) , that you r eceive
sour ce co de or can ge t it i f you want it, t hat you c an change the s oftwa re or use
piec es of i t in new fr ee prog rams, a nd tha t you kn ow you ca n do th ese thin gs.
To protec t your rig hts, we need to pre vent other s from den ying you these rights or
ask ing you to sur render the r ights . Ther efore, y ou have c ertai n respons ibilit ies if
you distr ibute co pies of the softw are, or if you modi fy it: respon sibiliti es to r espec t
t he freedo m of ot hers.
For ex ample, i f yo u distribu te copies of suc h a program, w hether grati s or for a fe e,
you m ust pas s on to the re cipients th e same fr eed oms that y ou rec eived. You
must make sure that they, too, recei ve or can get the source code. And yo u must
show t hem th ese ter ms so th ey know thei r rights.
De velopers that u se the G NU GPL prote ct your righ ts with two step s: (1) as sert
copy right on the sof twar e, and (2) of fer you this Li cense giving you leg al perm is-
sio n to copy , distrib ute an d/or mod ify it.
For th e dev eloper s’ and authors ’ prote ction, th e GPL c learly explai ns that the re is
no w arranty for this fr ee softwa re. For both us ers’ and author s’ sak e, the GPL re-
quir es that m odified versions be marked as changed, so th at the ir probl ems wil l
not be a ttr ibuted er roneou sly to authors of pr eviou s versi ons.
Some dev ices are designe d to de ny users acces s to instal l or run modi fied ver-
sio ns of the s oftwa re inside them, although t he man ufac turer can do so. T his is
f undamental ly incomp atib le with the aim of pr ote cting user s’ freedom to c hang e
t he soft ware. T he sy stematic pattern of s uch ab use o ccur s in the a rea o f p roducts
f or individuals to use, which is precisely wh ere it is most unac ceptabl e. Therefor e,
we have des igned th is vers ion of the GPL to pr oh ibit the p ractice f or thos e prod-
ucts . If such proble ms arise subs tant ially in o ther doma ins, we s tand read y to e x-
t end this provision to thos e dom ains in futur e ver sions of th e GP L, as nee ded to
pro tect the fr eedo m of users .
Fi nally, every progra m is threatened constantl y by sof tware patent s. Sta tes should
not al low p atents to r estrict develop ment a nd use of s oftware o n gene ral- purpose
comp uters, bu t in those that do, we wish to avo id the spec ial dange r that patents
appli ed to a fr ee p rogram c ould m ake it effec tivel y pr oprieta ry. To preven t this, the
GP L assures that p atents c annot be used to render the program non -free.
