Introduction
Y our A V950/A VR750/450/380 receiv er pro vides all the
key decoding and pr ocessing modes for analogue a nd
digital signals, including the la test high denition a udio
forma ts over HD MI.
Modes for digital sourc es
Digital recordin gs are usually encoded to incl ude
informa tion about their f ormat type. e A V950/
A VR750/450/380 detects auto matically the relevan t
forma t in a digital signal – such as Dolby T rueHD ,
Dolby Digital Pl us, DTS-HD Master A udio , Dolb y
Digital, or DTS – and swi tches in the ap pro priate
decoding.
Modes for analogue sourc es
Analogue recor dings do not co ntain info rmation abou t
their encoding forma ts, so the desired mode – such as
Dolby Pr o Logic – needs to be selected manually .
Mode memory
Dolby Digital or D TS audio (includin g the high
denition f ormats) can be ou tpu t in two mix modes,
selected using the MODE button:
< Surr ound (e.g., ve ma in channels p lus a sub woofer
for a 5.1 sour ce)
< St ereo downmix.
T wo-channel audio , rega rdless of whether i t is analogue
or digital can also be outp ut in two mix modes, selected
using the mode but ton:
< Surr ound (e.g., Dolb y Pro Logic II Mo vie, N eo:6
M usic, etc.)
< St ere o.
e A V950/A VR750/450/380 stores the settin gs for
each source. us the decoding mode for the follo wing
group s of source ma terial can be stored independen tly:
< Dolb y Digital (multi-chan nel) and DTS source
mate ri al
< T wo channel Dolb y , PCM or Analogue source
mate ri al
T wo- channel sourc e modes
e follo wing decoding and surround m odes are for
creating 5-c hannel and 7-c hannel ster eo modes from
2-channel sour ces. ey are a vailable fo r standard a nd

Dolby PLII x modes are only selectable when
Surro und Back speakers are pr esent.
Stereo
In this mode the A V950/A VR750/450/380 works as a
con vention al high quality audio am plier . Note that
if the subwoo fer is enabled in st ereo mode, then some
processin g of the signal is carried out.
< Ste reo Dire ct : this achieves the best sound quality if
an analogue connection is pr esent.
< 5/7 C hannel S tereo: thi s produce s an output f rom
all speakers by cop ying the le outp ut to all le
speakers and the right ou tpu t to all right speakers.
e centre s peaker outpu ts a mix of le and righ t.
Dolby Pro L ogic II
Dolby Pr o Logic II decoding is designed to produce v e-
channel o utp ut from two-ch annel source ma terial.
ere ar e three dieren t modes availab le in Pro Logic II:
‘M ovie ’ , ‘ M usic ’ and ‘ Game ’ modes, w hic h are in tended
for use as their nam es suggest. Due to the dier ent
recor ding methods used for movies, m usic and video
games, it i s recommended tha t the correct decoding
mode for yo ur source ma terial is used to obtain best
results.
< Movie mode : is is intended for use with
‘ cinematic’ ma terial, which is mixed and m onito red
in a calibrat ed multi-chann el enviro nment. M ovie
dec odi ng
modes
mode is a ‘x ed’ mode that i s designed to give a
similar sound when listenin g using a home cin ema
system to tha t obtained in a cinema.
< Music mode : Stereo m usic is not designed fo r
surround p rocessing, altho ugh good surround
eects can be obtained thro ugh careful production.
As the op timum decoding method varies accordin g
to the recor ding, M usic mode allows the user
adjus tment of the p rocessing chara cteristics.
< G ame mode : V ideo gam es today are extr emely
sophistica ted, with drama tic 5.1 surround
audio tracks. Gam e mode gives augmen ted bass
managem ent to ca pture the full eect of gam e
sounds panned to the surro unds, ensuring the
bass impact from p urer surro und eects are fully
deliver ed to the subwoof er .
Dolby Pro L ogic IIx
Dolby Pr o Logic IIx is an extensio n of the Dolby P ro
Logic matrix-decoding method. e decoder allows
the processor to de rive seven outp uts from a two o r
multi-cha nnel (up to 5.1 wi th EX) source to take better
advan tage of all am pliers and speakers in a 7.1 setu p.
As with Pr o Logic, there are three di erent m odes
availab le: Mo vie, M usic and Game. Due to di eren t
recor ding methods used for movies a nd music, yo u
should select the correct mode for yo ur source ma terial.
Dolby Pro L ogic
Dolby Pr o Logic is a legacy mode that is designed
to prod uce a ve-chann el outp ut from tw o-channel
source ma terial. I t should be used only when the source
material is encoded as Dolb y Pro Logic; otherwise,
we recomm end the use of Dolby P ro Logic II. is is
because Pro Logic pr ocessing on straigh t stereo sources
can sound m ued and comp ressed.
D TS Neo:6
DTS Neo:6 pr ovides up t o six full-band channels
of decoding from st ereo material. e A V950/
A VR750/450/380 will derive separate chan nels
correspon ding to the standar d home theatr e layou t.
< Cinema : A movie mode designed to r eproduce a
movie theatr e enviro nment. N eo:6 technology allows
various sound elem ents within a cha nnel or cha nnels
to be steered separat ely , and in a way which follo ws
the original presen tation na turally .
< Mus ic : A music m ode designed to produce a live ly ,
high-integrity surro und-eect from most tw o-
channel m usic sources fr om all available s peakers.
