Dolby Surround ProLogic, Dolby Digital
These sound systems have been developed to give you the feeling of being
placed inside the action. This is achieved by additional sound channels for the
dialogues (centre channel), as well as the surround and special effects (back
channel). In general, a difference must be made between Dolby Surround and
Dolby Digital (also called AC3).
With Dolby Surround Pro Logic, the surround sound is derived from the stereo
signal. This system transmits the front sound channels (front left, front centre,
front right) and one back channel (therefore also called 3/1 system). However,
this method has the disadvantage that, for technical reasons, the back channel
consists of a mono signal and must be limited in its frequency range and dyna-
mics, that is, the treble tones of the back channel are cut down.
On the other hand, Dolby Digital is a digital sound system for an entirely inde-
pendent multi-channel sound reproduction. With this system, five full sound
channels (front left, front centre, front right, rear left, rear right) and one bass
channel are transmitted (therefore als called 5.1 system). Compared with Dolby
Surround Pro Logic, two surround sound channels for stereo surround sound
with a full and realistic sound reproduction are available with the Dolby Digital
sound system.
The five sound channels enable a sound contrast which guarantees an entirely
new hearing pleasure. The precise sound location gives a fully realistic effect to
the film.
Depending on the loudspeaker configuration available, it is also possible to
split the 5.1 channels of Dolby Digital into fewer channels.
Note:
For Dolby Digital sound, the reproduction unit (e.g. DVD player) must be
connected via an optical cable or a phono cable with the digital sound input
of the TV set (see page 42).
