FLASH OPERATION

GENERAL INFORMATION ON FLASH EXPOSURE METERING

AND CONTROL

The Leica S determines the required ﬂash power by ﬁring one or more

ranging ﬂashes in quick succession, fractions of a second before taking

the actual picture. Immediately after this, at the start of exposure, the

main ﬂash is ﬁred.

All factors that inﬂuence the exposure (such as ﬁlters, aperture setting,

distance to the main subject, reﬂective surfaces, etc.) are automatically

taken into account.

COMPATIBLE FLASH UNITS

Connection using the ﬂash shoe (1.14)

- All ﬂash units and studio ﬂash systems that comply with the currently

valid ISO standard 10330 and the older DIN 190141 (positive polarity at

X contact)

Connection using the lower LEMO® socket (1.34)

- All ﬂash units and studio ﬂash systems that allow control using corre-

sponding special cables

Connection using the ﬂash connecting socket (1.31)

- Studio ﬂash systems and other ﬂash units with ﬂash cable and standard

ﬂash connector

The following ﬂash units, when used on the Leica S, are capable of all the

functions described in this manual:

1 If, for example, you want to connect a studio ﬂash system to the Leica S that does

not comply with the ISO standard, contact Leica Camera AG's Customer Care

department (for address see p. 74) or the customer service department of a Leica

agent.

• The Leica SF 58 system ﬂash unit (see p. 65). With a maximum guide

number of 58 (for ISO 100 and 105mm setting), an automatically con-

trolled zoom reﬂector, an optional second reﬂector and many other

functions, it is both powerful and versatile. Thanks to its permanently

attached ﬂash foot with additional control and signal contacts, which

are used to automatically transfer a range of data and settings, it is very

easy to use.

• Flash units that meet the technical requirements for System Camera

Adaption (SCA) System 3002, are equipped with an SCA-3502-M5 2, 3

adapter, allow guide number control and are HSS compatible (see p. 54).

However, other commercially available ﬂash units with a standard ﬂash

foot 4, 5 and positive center contact, and ﬁred by the center contact (X

contact, 1.14a) can also be used (without TTL ﬂash control). We recom-

mend the use of modern thyristor-controlled electronic ﬂash units.

2 When using the SCA-3502 adapter (version 5 onwards) the white balance (see p.

33) can be set to Automatic for correct color reproduction.

3 The use of ﬂash systems from other camera manufacturers and SCA adapters for

other camera systems is not recommended as their differing contact positions

and assignments can result in malfunctions or even damage to the camera.

4 If ﬂash units not specially designed for the Leica S are used, the white balance on

the camera should be manually set to if required.

5 The set aperture and the sensitivity may need to be entered manually on the ﬂash

unit.

FLASH SYNC SPEED

With conventional ﬂash technology, i.e. when setting the shutter speed

dial to (see p. 8) with the camera's focal plane shutter, the ﬂash

sync speed on the Leica S is 1/125 s. If the central shutter in compatible

lenses (see p. 24/65) is used, all shutter speeds up to 1/1000s are

available.

With system compatible HSS (see p. 54) ﬂash units, all faster shutter

speeds can also be used.

Studio ﬂash systems in particular often have luminosity times that are

considerably longer than the speciﬁed sync speeds. In order to take

full advantage of the light quantity provided by these ﬂash units, slower

shutter speeds are recommended.

Notes:

• At all shutter speeds up to the sync speed 1/125 s in the viewﬁnder

(2.5b) X lights up to indicate that normal ﬂash operation is possible at

these speeds.

• If the shutter speed dial is set to , the deﬁned shutter speeds then

mean that the preset exposure modes may be changed, i.e. from to

, or from to (see p. 42). As soon as a shutter speed is speciﬁed

again, the original modes are reset.

• If you are using the Leica SF 58 (see p. 65) and faster shutter speeds

are set on the camera, i.e. ≤ 1/180 s with focal plane shutter, and

≤ 1/1500s with central shutter, the ﬂash unit automatically switches to

HSS mode (see p. 54).
