PUTTING INTO OPERA TION (Fig. 2 5)
CA UTION:
Before doing any w ork on the guide bar or chain, always switc h off the engine
and pull the plug cap off the spark plug (see “Replacing the spark plug”).
Alwa ys wear protect ive gloves!
CA UTION:
Do not start the saw until it has been complet ely assemb led and inspected!
Mounting the guid e bar and saw chain (Fig. 26)
Use the universal wrench delivere d with the chain saw f or the followin g work.
Put the chain sa w on a stab le surf ace and carry out the follo wing steps for mo unting
the guide bar and chain:
Disengage the chain brak e by pulling the hand guard (1) in the directio n of the arrow .
Unscrew retaining n u t (2).
Carefully spread the sproc ket co ver (3), pull it from its fixtur e (4) and remov e it.
T urn the chain adjusting screw (5) to the left (counter clockwise ) until the pin (6) is at
the right stop . (Fig. 27 & 28)
P osition the guide bar (7). (Fig. 29)
Lift the chain (9) o ver the sprock et (10). Using your right hand, guide th e chain into
the top guide groo ve (11) on the guide bar . (Fig. 30)
Note that the cutting edges along the top of the chain must point in the direc-
tion of the arro w !
Pull the chain (9) around the nose (12 ) of the guide bar in the direction of the arro w.
Pull the guide bar b y hand fully tow ard its nose . Make sure that the chain b lade fits
the groo ves o f the guide ba r . (Fig. 31)
First, push the sproc ket co ver (3) into its fixture (4). Mak e sure that the pin (8) of the
chain tightener i s in the hole on the guide bar . Then push it o ver t he retaining bolt
while lifting the saw chain (9) o ver the chain catch (13).
Manually tighten the retain ing nut (2). (Fig. 32)
Tighteni ng the sa w chain
T urn the chain adjusting screw (5) to the right (cloc kwise) until the chain engages the
guide groov e of the bottom side of the bar (see circle).
Slightly lift the end o f the guide bar and turn the chain adjusting scre w (5) to the right
(clockwise) until the chain rests against the bottom side of the guide bar .
While still holding u p the tip of the guide bar , tighten the retaining nuts (2) wit h the uni-
versal wr ench. (Fig. 33)
Chec king the chai n tension (Fig. 34)
The tension of the chain is cor rect if the chai n rests against th e bottom side of the
guide bar and can still be easi ly turned by hand.
While doing so the chain brak e must be released.
Check the chain tension frequently - new chains tend to get longer during use!
When checking the chain tension t he engine m ust be s witched off.
NO TE:
It is recommended to use 2 – 3 chains alternatively .
In order to guar antee unif or m wear of the guid e bar the bar should b e turned ov er
whenev er replacing the chain.
Chain brake ( Fig. 35)
The DCS230T/DCS231T/DCS232T comes with an inertia chain brak e as standard
equipment. If kic kback occurs due to co ntact of the guide-bar t ip with wood (see
“SAFETY PRECA UTIONS”), the chain brake will stop the chain through inertia if the
kickbac k is sufficiently strong.
The chain will stop within a fracti on of a second.
The chain brake is installed to b lock the sa w chain befo re starting it and to stop
it immediatel y in case of an emergenc y .
IMPORT ANT : NEVER run the saw with the c hain brake activ ated! Doing so can
very quickl y cause extensive engine dama g e!
AL W A YS release the chain brake before starting the work!
NO TE:
The chain brake is a very important safety device and like an y other component
subject to normal wear and tear . Regular inspection and maintenance are
important for y our own safety and m ust be done by a MAKIT A service centre.
Engaging the chain brake (braki ng) (Fig. 36)
If the kick back is strong enough the sudden acceler ation of the gu ide bar combined
with the inertia of the hand guard (1) will automaticall y actuate the chain bra ke.
T o engage the chain br ake manuall y, simply push the hand guard (1) f orward
(tow ards the tip of the sa w) with your left hand (arro w 1).
Releasing the chain brake
Pull the hand guard (1) tow ards you (arrow 2) un til you f eel it catch. The br ake is now
releas ed.
Fuel (Fig. 3 7)
CA UTION:
This saw is powered by mineral-oil products (gasoline (p etrol) and oil).
Be especially careful when handling gasoli ne (petrol ).
Av oid all flame or fire. Do not smoke (explosion hazard).
Fuel mixture
The engine of the chain saw is a high-efficiency two -stroke engin e. It runs on a mix-
ture of gasoline and two-st roke engine oil.
The engine is designed f or unleaded regular gasolin e with a min. octa ne val ue of 91
ROZ. In case no such fuel is a vailable , you can use fuel with a h igher octane v alue.
This will not aff ect the engine .
In order to obtain an optimum engine output and to protect your health and the
envir onment use unleaded fuel only .
Fo r lubricating the engine use a two-strok e engine oil (quality grade: JA SO FC, ISO
EGO), which is added to the fuel.
Caution: Do not use ready-mixed fuel from petrol stations.
The correct mixture ratio:
25:1 i.e. mix 25 parts gasoline with 1 par t oil.
NO TE:
Fo r preparing the fuel-oil mixture first mix the entire oil quantity with half of the fuel
required, then ad d the remaining f uel. Shake the mixture thor oughly bef ore pouring it
into the ta nk.
It is not wise to add more engine oil than specified to ensure saf e operation.
This will only result in a higher pr oduction of combustion residues which will
pollute the env ironment and clog the e xhaust channel in the cylinder as well as
the muffler . In addition, fuel consumption will rise and performance will
decrease.
The Storage of Fue l
Fuels hav e a limited storage lif e. Fuel and fuel mixtures ag e. Theref ore fuel and fuel
mixtures, whi ch hav e been stored for too lon g, can cause starting problems . Pur-
chase only that amount of fuel, whi ch will be consumed ov er the ne xt few mon ths.
Store fuel safel y in a dry place in appro ved containers only .
A VOID SKIN AND EYE CONT ACT
Mineral oil pro ducts degrease y our skin. If your skin comes i n contact with these sub -
stances repeatedly and f or an extended period of ti me, it will desiccate. V ar ious skin
deseases ma y result. In additi on, allergic reaction s are known to occur . Eyes can be
irritated by contact wit h oil. If oil comes into y our eyes , immediately w ash them with
clear water .
If your ey es are still irritated, see a doct or immediately!
Chain oil
Use an oil with adhesiv e additiv e for lubricating the chain an d guide
bar . The adhesive additiv e prevents the oil f rom being flung off the
chain too quic kly .
We recommend t he use of chain oil which is bio-deg radabl e in order to
protect the en vironment. The use of bio-degr adable oil ma y ev en be
required by local regulations.
The chain oil BIO TOP sold by MAKIT A is made of special v egetable oils and is 100%
bio-degrad able . BIO TOP has been grant ed the “blue an gel” (Blauer Umweltschutz-
Engel) f or being particularly environment-friendly (RAL UZ 48).
BIO T OP chain oil is av ailable in the f ollowing sizes:
1 l order number 980 008 210
5 l order number 980 008 211
Bio-degrada ble oil is sta ble only f or a limited period of time. It should
be used within 2 y ears from the date of manuf acture (printed on the
container).
Important no te on bio-degradable chain oils:
If you a re not planning to use the sa w again f or an extended period of time, empt y the
oil tank and put in a small amount of regula r engine oil (SAE 30), and then run the
saw f or a time. This is necessary to flush out all remainin g bio-degrad able oil fro m the
oil tank, oil-f eed system, chain and guide bar , as many such oils tend to leav e sticky
residues ov er time, which can cause damage to the oil pump or other par ts.
The next time y ou use the saw , fill the tank with BIOT OP chain oil again. In case of
damage caused b y using waste oil or inappropriate chain oil the product gu arantee
will be null and v o id.
Y our salesman will inform you about the use of chain oil.
NEVER USE WASTE OIL (Fig. 38)
W aste oil is v er y dangerous f or the environment.
W aste oil contains high amo unts of carcinogenic su bstances. Residue s in wast e oil
result in a high degree of w ear and tear at the oil pump and the sa wing de vice.
In case of damage caused b y using waste oil or unappropriate chain oil the product
guarantee wil l be null and v oid.
Y our salesman will inform you about the use of chain oil.
Refuelling (Fig. 39)
FOLLO W THE SAFETY PRECA UTIONS!
Be careful and cautious when handling fuels.
The engine must be s witched off!
Thoroughly clean the area arou nd the caps, to pre vent dirt from getting into the fuel or
oil tank.
Unscrew the cap and fill the tank with fuel (fuel/oil mixture) or chai n oil as the case
may be . Fill up to the bottom edge of the filler nec k. Be careful not to spill fuel or chain
oil!
Tighten the fuel caps f ar as it will go .
Clean screw cap and tank after ref uelling.
