Inadvertent erasing of a recording can be pre-
vented by breaking off the tab on the left of the top
of the cassette when using the cassette in the l>
direction (seefig. 3). When using the cassette in the
O direction, you must break off the right-hand tab.
After doing this, no recording can be made on the
side in question. This safeguard can be rendered
ineffective with a piece of adhesive tape.
Musicassettes are prerecorded cassettes which
are aiready protected against erasure.
After use, store your cassettes in their boxes.
Keep the cassettes at room temperature, do not
allow them to lie in the sun or too near magnets and
transformers of, for example, recorders, radios,
televisions and loudspeakers.
TYPES OF TAPE
The type, brand and quality of a cassette have great
influence on the quality of a tape recording.
For correct operation of the noise reduction system
without side effects, it is essential to use cassettes
of good quality. In general, Chromium cassettes
(lEC type n), and Metal cassettes (lEC type 12) will
give the best results.
Before recording and playback of sound, it is
necessary that the recorder is adapted to the type
of tape which is used. The correct setting is carried
out automatically, when using Ferro cassettes
(lEC type I), Chromium cassettes (lEC type H), and
Metal cassettes (lEC type E).
Remark
If no cassette is inserted, the 'METAL' indicator will
light up.
RECORDING LEVEL AND MONITORING
The level at which the sound is recorded on the
tape determines the sound quality during playback.
The recording level can be adjusted before begin-
ning the recording; if this is not possible, the
adjustment can also be made during the recording.
When recording, a previous recording on that
part of the tape is automatically erased. If you wish
to erase without recording, set the recording level
Controls @ to 'O' and let the tape run in the record
mode.
In order to check what is being recorded on the
tape,
you can listen to the recording via head-
phones connected to socket @ or via an amplifier
connected to the outputs ® (Fig. 2).
DOLBY B AND C NR SYSTEM
This cassette deck is equipped with both the
Dolby B and the Dolby C noise-reduction system,
manufactured under license from Dolby Laborato-
ries Licensing Corporation.
The word Dolby and the symbol are trademarks
of Dolby Laboratories Licensing Corporation.
Better noise reduction is obtained with the Dolby C
system than with the Dolby B system. This is
achieved by amplifying weak high-frequency tones
(treble) during recording and attenuating them
during playback - together with the noise - to a
greater degree than with the Dolby B system.
ON/OFF button @ is the on/off switch for both
Dolby Systems.
You can choose between the Dolby B and
Dolby C noise-reduction systems with B/C button
@.
A cassette recorded with the Dolby B noise-reduc-
tion system must also be played back with the B/C
button in the Dolby B position. The same is true for
the Dolby C: a cassette recorded with the Dolby C
system must also be played back with the B/C
button in the Dolby C position. If this button for
Dolby B or C is in the wrong position, or if you forget
to actuate the Dolby NR ON/OFF button, the
high-frequency tones (treble) may be reproduced
too strongly or too weakly.
Therefore, make a note on your cassettes in-
dicating if they have been recorded with the
Dolby B or Dolby C noise-reduction system. Musi-
cassettes may also have been recorded with the
Dolby B or C system. This is indicated on the
cassette or lts box.
MAINTENANCE
We advise you to clean the heads, capstans and
pinch rollers of your cassette deck regularly. This is
generally necessary after every 15 hours of opera-
tion.
It is also advisable to clean the aforementioned
components before an important recording. We
advise you to use our SBC 114 cleaning cassette
for this purpose. This cassette must be played right
through once (or if the components are very dirty,
twice) in the playback mode. If you do not have this
cleaning cassette, you may use cotton wool buds.
You can use the cotton wool buds dry or moisten
them with a little alcohol.
Switch off the cassette deck.
Press the 'EJECT' button @.
