This appliance is not intended for use by
per sons (including children) with reduced

Children should be super vised to ensure that
they do not play with the appliance.
Do not use the shav er or the mains cord if it is
damaged.
If the mains cord is damaged, al ways ha ve it
replaced with one of the original type in order
to av oid a hazard.
Caution
Always put the protection cap on the sha ver
to protect the shaving heads when y ou are
travelling (Fig. 3).
Only use the mains cord supplied.
Store the appliance at a temperature between
5°C and 35°C .
This appliance is not washable. Nev er immer se
the appliance in water , nor rinse it under the
tap.
Compliance with standards
This Philips appliance complies with all standards
regarding electromagnetic elds (EMF). If handled
proper l y and according to the instr uctions in this
user manual, the appliance is saf e to use based on
scientic evidence availab le today .
General
The appliance is equipped with an automatic
voltage selector and is suitab le for mains
voltages from 100 to 240 v olts.
Using the appliance
Sha ving
1 Put the appliance plug in the sha ver (Fig. 4).
2 Put the mains plug in the wall socket.
3 Push the on/off slide upwards to switch on
the sha ver .
4 Mo ve the sha ving heads ov er your skin. Mak e
both straight and circular mo vements (Fig. 5).

Shaving on a dr y face giv es the best results.
Y our skin ma y need 2 or 3 weeks to get
accustomed to the Philips shaving system.
5 Push the on/off slide downwards to s witch off
the sha ver .

T rimming (HQ6940 only)
Y ou can use the trimmer to tr im y our sideb ur ns
and moustache .
1 Push the slide upwards to open the
trimmer (Fig. 6).
The trimmer can be activated while the motor is
r unning.
Cleaning and maintenance
Regular cleaning guarantees better shaving
performance .
This appliance is not washable. Nev er immerse
the appliance in water , nor rinse it under the tap .
Nev er use scouring pads, abrasive cleaning agents
or aggressiv e liquids such as petrol or acetone to
clean the appliance.
For easy and optimal cleaning, Philips Shaving
Head Cleaning Spray (type no. HQ110)
is availab le . Ask y our Philips dealer for
information.
Note: Philips Shaving Head Cleaning Spray may not
be available in all countries . Contact the Customer
Care Centre in your country about the availability of
this accessor y .
Y ou can also clean the sha ver in the f ollowing way:
Every week: sha ving unit and hair
chamber
1 Switch off the shav er . Remov e the mains plug
from the wall sock et and pull the appliance
plug out of the sha ver .
2 Clean thetopoftheappliancerst. Usethe
cleaning brush supplied (Fig. 7).
3 Pr ess the r elease button (1) and remov e the
sha ving unit (2) (Fig. 8).
4 Clean the inside of the sha ving unit and the
hair chamber with the cleaning brush (Fig. 9).
5 Put the shaving unit back onto the
sha ver (Fig. 10).
Every two months: sha ving heads
1 Switch off the shav er . Remov e the mains plug
from the wall sock et and pull the appliance
plug out of the sha ver .
2 Pr ess the r elease button (1) and remov e the
sha ving unit (2) (Fig. 8).
3 T urn the wheel anticlockwise (1) and r emove
the retaining frame (2) (Fig. 11).
4 Remo ve the cutters and guar ds and
clean them with the cleaning brush
supplied (Fig. 12).
Note: Do not c lean mor e than one cutter and
guard at a time, since they ar e all matching sets .
If you accidentally mix up the cutters and guards ,
it may tak e sever al weeks befor e optimal shaving
performance is restor ed.
5 Clean the cutter with the shor t-bristled side
of the cleaning brush (Fig. 13).
Br ush carefull y in the direction of the arrow .
6 Brush the guard (Fig. 14).

7 Put the shaving heads back into the sha ving
unit. Put the retaining frame back into the
sha ving unit, push it down (1) and turn the
wheel clockwise (2) (Fig. 15).
8 Put the shaving unit back onto the sha v er .
Extra thorough cleaning
For extra thorough cleaning, put the sha ving
heads in a degreasing liquid (e .g. alcohol) ever y six
months. T o remo ve the sha ving heads, f ollow steps
1 to 4 described above. After cleaning, lubricate
the central point on the inside of the guards with a
drop of sewing machine oil to prevent w ear of the
shaving heads.
T rimmer (HQ6940 only)
Clean the trimmer ever y time you ha ve used it.
1 Switch off the shav er . Remov e the mains plug
from the wall sock et and pull the appliance
plug out of the sha ver .
2 Clean the trimmer with the cleaning brush
supplied (Fig. 16).
Tip: Lubr icate the trimmer teeth with a dr op of
sewing machine oil ever y six months (Fig. 17).

1 Put the protection cap on the sha v er to
pre vent damage (Fig. 3).
Replacement
Replace the shaving heads ev er y two y ear s f or
optimal shaving results.
Replace damaged or worn shaving heads with
HQ55 Philips Shaving Heads onl y .
1 Switch off the shav er . Remov e the mains plug
from the wall sock et and pull the appliance
plug out of the sha ver .
2 Pr ess the r elease button (1) and remov e the
sha ving unit (2) (Fig. 18).
3 T urn the wheel anticlockwise (1) and remov e
the retaining frame (2) (Fig. 11).
4 Remo ve the sha ving heads and place ne w
ones in the sha ving unit (Fig. 12).
5 Put the retaining frame back into the sha ving
unit, push it down (1) and turn the wheel
clockwise (2) (Fig. 15).
6 Put the shaving unit back onto the sha v er .

Do not throw a way the appliance with the
normal household waste at the end of its life ,
but hand it in at an ofcial collection point for
recycling. By doing this, you help to preser v e
the environment (Fig. 19).
