per sons (including children) with reduced
physical, sensor y or mental capabilities, or lack
of experience and knowledge , unless they
hav e been given super vision or instr uction
concerning use of the appliance by a per son
responsible for their saf ety .
Children should be super vised to ensure that
they do not play with the appliance.
Do not use the shav er or the mains cord if it is
damaged.
If the mains cord is damaged, al ways hav e it
replaced with one of the original type in order
to av oid a hazard.
Caution
Always put the protection cap on the sha ver
to protect the shaving heads when y ou are
travelling (Fig. 3).
Only use the mains cord supplied.
Charge , use and store the appliance at a
temperature between 5°C and 35°C .
This appliance is not washable. Nev er immer se
the appliance in water , nor rinse it under the
tap.
Compliance with standards
This Philips appliance complies with all standards
regarding electromagnetic elds (EMF). If handled
proper l y and according to the instr uctions in this
user manual, the appliance is safe to use based on
scientic evidence availab le today .
General
The appliance is equipped with an automatic
voltage selector and is suitab le for mains
voltages from 100 to 240 v olts.
Charging
Charge the appliance:
before r st use and when you ha ve not used
the appliance for a long time
when the motor stops or star ts r unning slo wer
When you ha ve charged the shaver f or the r st
time and after a long period of disuse , optimise the
batter y capacity in the following wa y:

1 Full y charge the shav er (see section ‘Charging
the sha ver’ below).
2 Empty the batter y thr ough normal use
(sha ving).
3 Repeat this process 2 more times.
Note: If you optimise the batter y capacity in this w ay,
you can also charge the shaver in between shaves ,
even if the battery is not completely empty yet. This
does not damage the battery.
Charging the sha ver
1 Put the appliance plug in the shav er (Fig. 4).
2 Put the mains plug in the wall socket.
Note: Mak e sure the shaver is switched off.
The charging light goes on. (Fig. 5)
3 Charge the shav er for at least 8 hours
(HQ6970/HQ6950/HQ6920) or 1 hour
(HQ6990), but not more than 24 hours.
HQ6990: When the batter y is fully char ged, the
charging light star ts ashing.
HQ6970/HQ6950/HQ6920: The charging light
stays on as long as the sha ver is connected to
the mains.
Note: Do not leave the shaver connected to the mains
continuously .
Note: Y ou can also shave without c harging. Simply
connect the shaver to the mains .
4 Remo ve the mains plug fr om the wall socket
and pull the appliance plug out of the sha ver
when the batter y is fully charged.
Cordless sha ving time
When the shav er is fully char ged, it has a cordless
shaving time of up to 10 da ys.
Using the appliance
Sha ving
1 Push the on/off slide upwards to switch on
the sha ver .
2 Mo ve the sha ving heads over y our skin. Make
both straight and circular mo vements (Fig. 6).
Shaving on a dr y face giv es the best results.
Y our skin may need 2 or 3 w eeks to get
accustomed to the Philips shaving system.
3 Push the on/off slide downwards to switch off
the sha ver .
4 Put the protection cap on the sha ver after
use, to pr event damage (Fig. 3).
T rimming (all types except HQ6920)
Y ou can use the trimmer to tr im y our sidebur ns
and moustache .
1 Push the slide upwards to open the
trimmer (Fig. 7).
The trimmer can be activated while the motor is
r unning.
Cleaning and maintenance
Regular cleaning guarantees better shaving
performance .
This appliance is not washable. Never immerse
the appliance in water , nor rinse it under the tap.
Nev er use scouring pads, abrasiv e cleaning agents
or aggressiv e liquids such as petrol or acetone to
clean the appliance.
For easy and optimal cleaning, Philips Sha ving
Head Cleaning Spray (type no. HQ110)
is availab le . Ask your Philips dealer f or
information.

Y ou can also clean the shav er in the following way:
Every week: sha ving unit and hair
chamber
1 Switch off the shav er . Remove the mains plug
from the wall sock et and pull the appliance
plug out of the sha ver .
2 Clean thetopoftheappliancerst. Usethe
cleaning brush supplied (Fig. 8).
3 Pr ess the release button (1) and r emove the
sha ving unit (2) (Fig. 9).
4 Clean the inside of the shaving unit and the
hair chamber with the cleaning brush (Fig. 10).
5 Put the shaving unit back onto the
sha ver (Fig. 11).
Every two months: sha ving heads
1 Switch off the shav er . Remove the mains plug
from the wall sock et and pull the appliance
plug out of the sha ver .
2 Pr ess the release button (1) and r emove the
sha ving unit (2) (Fig. 9).
3 T urn the wheel anticlockwise (1) and remove
the retaining frame (2) (Fig. 12).
4 Remo ve the sha ving heads (Fig. 13).
Note: Do not c lean mor e than one cutter and
guard at a time, since they are all matc hing sets.
If you accidentally mix up the cutters and guards ,
it may tak e sever al weeks before optimal shaving
performance is restor ed.
5 Clean the cutter with the shor t-bristled side
of the cleaning brush (Fig. 14).
Br ush carefull y in the direction of the ar ro w .
6 Clean the guard with the long-bristled side of
the cleaning brush (Fig. 15).
7 Put the shaving heads back into the sha ving
unit. Put the retaining frame back into the
sha ving unit, push it do wn (1) and turn the
wheel clockwise (2) (Fig. 16).
8 Put the shaving unit back onto the sha ver .
Extra thorough cleaning
For extra thorough cleaning, put the sha ving
heads in a degreasing liquid (e .g. alcohol) ever y six
months. T o remo ve the sha ving heads, follow steps
1 to 4 described above. After cleaning, lubr icate
the central point on the inside of the guards with a
drop of sewing machine oil to prevent w ear of the
shaving heads.
T rimmer (all types except HQ6920)
Clean the trimmer ever y time you ha ve used it.
1 Switch off the shav er . Remove the mains plug
from the wall sock et and pull the appliance
plug out of the sha ver .
2 Clean the trimmer with the cleaning brush
supplied (Fig. 17).
Tip: Lubr icate the trimmer teeth with a dr op of
sewing machine oil ever y six months (Fig. 18).
Storag e
1 Put the protection cap on the sha ver after
use, to pr event damage (Fig. 3).
Replacement
Replace the shaving heads ev er y two years for
optimal shaving results.
