17.3 PROGRAMMABLE MIXERS
The FX-40 features ten fr
eely programmable mixers which are
available for every model memory, in addition to the fixed pre-
programmed mixer functions. The programmable mixers fea-
ture pre-set transmitter control settings which can be called
up, ranging from a linear characteristic to a maximum nine-
point curve; the latter can be expanded to seventeen points
for special purposes.
The primary use of these mixers is to compensate for interac-
tions between the individual functions of fixed-wing model air-
craft, e.g. for precision aerobatic flying. When the corrective
mixers are properly set up, the model becomes generally sim-
pler and more pleasant to fly. The mixers can be set up to link
any functions and channels (Master and Slave channels).
Six curve types are available for the transmitter control confi-
guration: one linear, two exponential, one VTR, one line and
one curve. All these mixers can be assigned a separately vari-
able delay, to avoid abrupt transitions when a mixer is swit-
ched on in flight. Another option is to set group mode (effec-
tive in all flight modes) or individual mode (effective only in a
specific flight mode).
The trim select function determines whether the trim of the
Master channel is also to affect the Slave channel. The Offset
option allows you to adjust the mixed (slave) channel to match
the main function, so that there is no control surface move-
ment at the neutral position. The switches or other transmitter
controls which are used to activate the various mixers can be
selected individually. Finally, it is even possible to define a
transmitter control which is used to fine-tune the linked set-
tings.
Mark the ‘Prog. Mixer’ option in the Model menu. The screen
now typically looks like this:
In each case the individual mixers are listed in a line. The pro-
gramming procedure is described here using the first mixer as
an example; mixers 2 to 9 are set up in exactly the same way.
This menu is used to enter your preferred settings for the mixer
in question. In the last column you can define whether the
mixer is only to apply to one flight mode (Sepa) or to all flight
modes globally (Glob); global mode is the default setting. To
change this setting, mark the field for the mixer you wish to
program. The display changes, and a security query appears
which must be answered with ‘Yes’. The change takes effect at
that point.
In the centre column (Mode) you can determine the mixer
mode using exactly the same procedure. Two modes are avai-
lable: a normal mixer with Master and Slave channels is the
first option, but an alternative ‘Offset’ mixer can also be selec-
ted. In this case no Master channel is required, as it is used, for
example, to mix a fixed value into a particular function when a
switch is operated. The two mixer types are distinguished by
appropriate symbols, as shown in the previous screen shot.
You move to the actual programming masks by marking the
appropriate field in the ‘Mixer’ column on the left. The display
changes, and the first mixer programming menu appears.
The programming procedure involves the following steps:
Activating the mixer
Mark the left field (‘INA’) in the first line; the default is ‘INA
(inactive). Marking the field activates the mixer, and ‘ON’
appears.
Defining the mixer switch
Mark the centre button field in the first line, and the switch
select menu is superimposed. You can now use the familiar
procedure to select the switch you wish to use, and the
direction of switch operation. If you want the mixer to be
switched on constantly, retain the default ‘NONE’ setting.
The selected switch is shown in graphic form on the screen.
Setting the servo transit speed and delay
Mark the right ‘SPEED’ field in the first line, and a sub-menu
for setting the servo transit speed and delay appears, sepa-
rately for both directions of travel, i.e. ‘there’ and ‘back’.
In this menu you can program the speed for both the ‘there’
direction and the ‘back’ direction. Mark one of the ‘Speed’
fields, and a pair of ‘Arrow’ buttons and one ‘Reset’ button
appear at the right margin. The adjustment range is 0 to 27
increments. Please note: the higher the number, the more
slowly the servo moves. The maximum value (27 incre-
ments) corresponds to a duration of nine seconds. The
value is changed using the arrow buttons. Pressing the
‘Reset’ button restores the default setting.
The delay times can be entered directly as time values in
the range 0.0 to 4.0 seconds, with an increment of 0.1
seconds. This value means the time which elapses between
operating the switch (in the ‘there’ direction), and the mixer
taking full effect. In the ‘Back’ field you can program a delay
which occurs when the mixer is switched off again. The
default setting is ‘0’. Pressing the ‘Reset’ field restores the
default setting.
