APPL YING DAMA GE AND
DEFEA TING OBST A CLES EXAMPLES
Her e are some mor e examples of ho w to apply damage and def eat
obstacles.
EXAMPLE 1. Chloe’ s playing a Fight er , and her turn has come up.
She want s to defeat a blue obstacle f acing another play er—the Minotaur .
The Minotaur ’ s damage tr ack is as shown at right:
Chloe has thr ee cards in her hand: Command
Pr esence, T o wer Shield, and Stealth, so she’ll
need some help.
Fir st Chloe plays Command Pr esence and
chooses Br ooklynn, who gets to dr aw a car d
and then pla y a card. Br ooklynn dra ws Cloud of
Dagger s, which would help immensely , but it’ s
far bet ter as an Assist. Inst ead Brooklyn of fer s to
pla y Misty Step , but decides not to use it s ability
to dr aw and discar d since she lik es her current
hand. Misty St ep deals
1
damage, which
Chloe gets to use. Chloe then places Command
Pr esence and Stealth next to the Minotaur, and
Chloe places Misty St ep there as w ell. But to
defeat the Minotaur , Chloe still needs another
blue damage fr om somewhere, a s well as tw o other damage. Meg then
decides to pla y Bless as an Assist, and chooses blue damage, placing
that car d next to the Minotaur . F or the other two damage, Chloe’ s T ow er
Shield would w ork fine. Howe ver , if pla yed as an Assist, it w ould stop an
encounter fr om attacking, and the party needs her t o sav e that card to
stop the St one Golem fr om hitting Meg next turn with it s scary 3 Attack
Str ength. So Ryana steps up and pla ys Ja velin as an A ssist, which deals
1
damage, placing it next t o the Minotaur as well. Finally , Chloe
pla ys her Stealth . No w that every one has finished playing car ds and
applying any t ext eff ects, Chloe now deals damage.
The first le vel of the Minotaur ’ s damage track r equires 4 damage of an y
type, so Chloe clear s it by using Command Pr esence’s
1
and taking
the
1
damage fr om both Misty Step and Ja velin f or a total of 4 damage
(the color s don’t matter). She places a clip o ver the
4
to sho w it’ s been
clear ed. Then she uses the remaining
damage fr om Misty Step t o clear
th e s e c on d l evel as w ell. The damage for the third le ve l ( a no t h er
) comes
fr om the Assist damage from Bless , lea ving only the final lev el on the
Minotaur, which is clear ed by the
fr om the Stealth card Chloe pla y ed.
While this defeat s the Minotaur before it can at tack, it did lea ve one point
of damage that couldn’t be assigned an ywhere: the
fr om the Jav elin.
Since she cannot split damage fr om a card betw een encounters, that e xtr a
damage is simply lost. While they try har d not to let that happen, the party
is just fine with how that pla yed out. The y defeated the Minotaur bef ore it
could attack, while ensuring that Chloe’ s T ow er Shield can stop another
encounter fr om attacking on a futur e turn. Now the y’ll decide if they want
to use the Minotaur ’ s V anquished eff ect or not.
Note that in the abo ve situation, Chloe could’ve simply tak en the
1
fr om the Jav elin Assist and pair ed it with the
1
fr om Command
Pr esence to clear the first le vel, lea ving the
1
fr om Misty Step as the
odd point of damage. How ever , there w ould still be a leftov er point that
can’t be assigned.
EXAMPLE 2. Jer emy is pla ying a Half-Orc Fight er and has a big
hand of car ds (he had three at the end of last turn, so dr ew tw o during
R eplenish, and then purchased t wo): Expertise , Flaming Oil , Gr apple,
Stealth, Glory, Gr ace, and T ow er Shield.
He looks ar ound the table, starting at his left and sees that Nick, their
Cleric, is stuck in the Moaning Chamber but has no other encount ers f acing
him. Meanwhile, Kristian a s the Wizard doesn’t ha ve an y encounters f acing
him (because the party all concentr ated on them t o save their Ar cane
char acter). How ever , the last pla yer in their game, R od, their other Fighter
(he also has the R ogue as his secondary Class T ype), w as Stunned last turn.
What’ s wor se, he is also stuck in the Slaad Planar Portal and f acing a Kobold
Pack and Cloak er. Finally, f acing Jerem y is a Death Slaad . There’ s some
seriously scary encounter s out there, none of which ha ve damage on them.
But Jer emy is sitting at 6 HP , and he’ s a Half-Or c after all. And he does hav e
that mega hand of car ds. Time for the big play!
During the Start T urn phase, Jerem y
tak es his Class T ype mark er and places it on
Slaad Planar Portal to indicat e he’ s mov ed
into that Location. No w that Location’ s
“start of t urn” text ef fect is applied: they
mak e a Sav e for the encounter b y re vealing
the next Secondary Deck car d. It’ s blue,
so Slaad Planar Portal failed and doesn’t
summon another slaad (they bury the
r evealed encount er), which is a really good thing, since Jer emy is
alr eady facing a slaad.
Ev en though he moved into the Slaad Planar Portal , he’ s still facing
that Death Slaad —changing his Location nev er changes what monster s
ar e facing him. But he is now also f acing that Location (since his Class
T ype mark er is ther e). Howe ver , the Kobold P ack and Cloak er—and their
tok ens—f acing Rod, who is in that same Location, ar e not facing Jer emy .
Now it’ s time to la y waste t o some encounters in spectacular
fa shion. He knows that Nick cannot help him with car ds, ev en though
Nick pr obably has a Bless or a Magic Missile in his hand, both of
which can be used as Assists. Since the y are both no w in separat e
Locations, Nick cannot pla y any Assists t o affect Jer emy or his
encounter s, and Jerem y cannot play an y cards or ef fects to help Nick
or aff ect his encounter s.
