next t o a specif ic encounter . Instead, he uses
the Grapple abilit y to pull the Kobold P ack,
along with all thr ee of its tok ens, to face
him (and places a generic tok en to hide its
At tack Strength, as w ell as the tok ens, as a
r eminder they won’t at tack this turn).
Now he pla ys T ow er Shield next to the Location.
And once mor e, before he f orgets,
due to the car d text of T ow er Shield,
he places a –1 tok en on the Death
Slaad. (Normally that –1 At tack
Str ength would apply to the K obold
Pack and all its t ok ens, but since they
wer e gr appled this turn, they’r e not
attacking an ywa y). Jerem y could
ha ve chosen to hold onto that car d to
k eep an encounter fr om attacking if
he pla yed it as an Assist on another pla yer’ s
turn, but he w ants the extr a damage; that card also giv es him three
Sw ord icons, so he can immediat ely dr aw a car d. Based on the dr awn car d,
a Cr own of Confusion, he immediately r evises ho w he was pla ying.
Fir st, he asks if an yone has an y Assists that would heal. Kristian ha s a
Healing Wor d, and Jerem y asks that one point be applied t o healing him
and one to R od, since Rod’ s got a pile of good Martial Assists in his deck.
(Ev en though Kristian didn’t want to buy car ds that didn’t match his Class
T ype, the Cleric had no gold and the party kne w they would need the
healing ef fect.) Kristian play s the card as an A ssist and assigns the healing
to Jer emy and R od.
R od, since he was healed
1 HP while being Stunned,
immediately dr aw s two car ds
and is no longer Stunned
(though he still has an
Exhausted t oken). A s luck
would ha ve it, he dr aw s a
Ja velin and T o wer Shield,
both of which ha ve Assists,
so he ma y play them immediately! R od pla ys both cards, and the y are placed
next t o the Death Slaad . Rod, using the te xt on the T ow er Shield Assist,
nominates the Death Slaad t o not attack this t urn (no attack is bett er than
the curr ent –1 Attack Str ength!). Because Rod pla yed thr ee Sw ords in a turn,
he immediately dr aw s another card, a Gr ace, which cannot be pla yed during
Jer emy’ s turn.
Then Jer emy pla ys Cro wn of Confusion on the Death Slaad and
nominates the K obold Pack
for its t ext ability . He re veals
a car d from the Primary
Deck, which is black. The
Kobold P ack Sav es so
Jer emy can’t use that car d’ s

Next Jer emy pla ys Flaming Oil and
places it abov e the Kobold P ack and
Death Slaad, since its damage will be
dealt to all the encount ers f acing him;
that also includes the Slaad Planar
Portal, ev en though it’ s phy sically
facing R od.
Now Jer emy pla ys Expertise . He’ s
feeling confident at this point, ha ving
run the number s through his head, and
places it next t o the Cloaker , which needs
to ha ve a lot of r ed damage assigned to it.
He then discar ds his Grace car d for the
te xt effect on E xpertise and pulls Twist the
Knife back int o his hand. Though he could
pla y it now , he’ s going to hold onto it to use
it as an Assist on Nick’ s turn to easily cle ar
the Moaning Chamber ’ s daunting

lev el
(after Nick clear s the first le vel), lea ving
Nick to clear the final le vel easily on his turn a s well.
Pr ovided, of course, that he br eaks himself out of
the Slaad Planar Portal this turn.
Then Jer emy ask s Kristian to add one more car d
into the fr a y since he’ s conf ident the Wizar d’ s last
car d is a Magic Missile . This will leav e Kristian with
no car ds at the start of his turn, but after a quick
discussion, he r ealizes this is the best party mo ve
because he’ s not f acing an encounter . He play s
Magic Missile as an Assist; it a ssigns its
damage to thr ee differ ent encounter s,
so it’ s not placed dir ectly next to one.
Finally , and knowing the y really need
to tak e these encounter s out and stop the
ev er creeping Dr agonfire le vel, Jer emy
pla ys his Glory and Stealth on the Death
Slaad (lea ving him the single T wist the
Knife in his hand).

which ones ha ve dealt their damage and been
defeat ed.)
